I Am Interested In Politics

The President-elect won the election with less than 40% of the popular vote but had the majority of electoral votes. The Republican Party had put forth a candidate to win several crucial states that could swing the electoral college. The election was a bitter one with the Democratic Party fractured between two candidates

The incoming President received so many death threats that he chose to arrive in Washington in secrecy. The security for the inauguration was the tightest ever with troops stationed on buildings throughout the day. This was an unprecedented amount of protection for any President-elect. Many members of Congress chose not to attend the ceremony.

Despite all this Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as our 16th president on March 4, 1861.

Any schoolgirl knows that the Republicans of Lincoln's day aligned more closely with Democrats of today and Democrats in the 1860's were more like the Republicans today. It's amazing how 150 years give or take a few will change things.

I also recall that Lincoln issued unpopular executive orders and the country ended up split by a civil war. So ... if Republicans really want credit for Lincoln I guess I don't mind too much.

The Confederacy fought the Civil War in support of states' rights against the Federal Government, and the Democratic Party continued to support the states, including especially the racist ones in the Deep South, for a hundred years. The Democrats don't seem so keen on states' rights now.

@MartinII: states rights were never adequate justification for the ownership of human beings IMHO. People try that states rights bullshit when it comes to civil rights for any minority. It's a shitty excuse used by bigots for hanging on to their bigotry.

States rights ought to apply to things like their local sales taxes, environmental agencies, and agricultural management. States do not get to decide whether or not people have human rights.

@Doomflower:

I have no problem with disagreement. But I take exception to highjacking one's post with photos.
