I Am Interested In Politics
I have to disagree with Beto O'Rourke's proposal for mandatory buybacks of AR-15's and AK-47's. That would be against not only the 2nd Amendment, but also 4th and 5th Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizures, and due process, "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation" from the 5th Amendment of the Bill of Rights.
I am in favor of sensible gun safety laws, and a federal assault weapons ban, but I respect the Bill of Rights.
It was politically unwise of him to make such a proposal. We may see him dropping out of the Democratic primary race. I believe he made that statement out of an emotional reaction to the August 3rd mass shooting in El Paso, where 22 people were killed and 24 injured. I believe he was genuinely shocked and grief-stricken to see his home town turned into a war zone. I sympathize but nevertheless, I believe the idea of mandatory buybacks is unconstitutional.
