I Am Interested In Politics

The Trump administration is busily trying to start a war with Iran. This is all about oil and controlling the Persian Gulf.

This would be another in a series of oil wars in the Middle-East. The U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 because Iraq has the second largest supply of oil in the world (about 10% of the world's total), second only to Saudi Arabia. The war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan has, so far, cost the U.S. about $3 Trillion, and for what result?

U.S. military spending is 100 times that of Iran. A war with Iran would result in tens of thousands of Iranian civilians being killed, massive destruction of Iran's infrastructure, resulting in wide spread hunger, sickness and destitution for the common people. U.S. military causalities would probably be in the hundreds to start, with more deaths later. The expense would be in the hundreds of $ billions. How are we going to pay for this enormously costly war?

A much more sane course of action would be for the U.S. to change to a clean energy economy. We could greatly reduce fossil fuel consumption by investing in solar energy, wind energy, and other clean energy sources. Also, change the transportation sector with a massive investment in a nation-wide modern high-speed passenger train system, and regional light-rail systems. We could pay for this by eliminating tax cuts and tax-shelters for the super wealthy, and instituting a tax on transactions in securities and derivatives, say a 1/4 of one percent.

We can choose destructive wars which will threaten our national security. Or we can choose domestic improvements, clean energy and trains. Which is it going to be?

Obviously your politics was given to you by CNN. Iran , the world’s sponsor for terrorism , is actively seeking nuclear weapons . That can never be allowed to happen ( as a matter of national security ) .

If Iran is stupid enough to provoke a response from the US military ... then they deserve the death and destruction they will receive . As for the oil , the US is the largest producer of oil in the world . Kind of blows your BS out of the water doesn’t it ?

@TexChik The Iranians let us regularly search all of their nuclear facilities for signs of evil stuff, and by all relevant accounts, there's no evidence that Iran legitimately continued to seek out nuclear weapons. Iran has had violations of the deal -- heavy water in particular -- but these violations were slight, and they don't suggest malice so much as idiocy, or maybe an economic interest gone awry.

The components and materials required for building a bomb are really very advanced and hard to produce, so such that it's very unlikely a regime could slip them past scientists on the sites.

@badminton As it stands though, the U.S. gets about 61% of its oil from the Americas, and oil prices are at just about an all-time low (thanks to our frienemy, Saudi Arabia). It doesn't really make sense for the U.S. to go after such a powerful country for a relatively small reward, and if we really wanted Iranian oil, we could just buy it.

I agree that big business is probably involved here, like the weapons manufacturing industry, but it's probably not oil.
