This is a worldwide problem. It is amazing how much domestic violence happens but most people never hear about it. When I was a policeman I dealt with many such cases. Many cases are just not reported though for many reasons. The domestic violence laws were made stricter here in S.Africa years ago for good reason.

It does help when abusers realize that they can be arrested straight away, detained in a cell and only released on bail by a magistrate after a court hearing.

Domestic violence is not only physical. It is physical, emotional or financial abuse. I hope your country gets very strict with this problem because it needs to.

Hopefully this commission will expose many things regarding domestic violence and the attitude of society which still does not take domestic violence seriously enough and will lead to stricter laws and their application.Domestic violence is now considered a crime in Australia but it is still not dealt with adequately.

One of the most satisfactory things was locking an abusive man in a cell together with 10 to 20 other criminals of all kinds on a Friday night because he had beaten up his wife or girlfriend. This was because he would stay there until Monday morning, the next court day, being fed disgusting food and having to deal with the other criminals. :-)
