It happened while I was in the first grade. The teachers decided, especially those in the primary grades, when they would call for what they delicately termed as "hall recess". But not every boy or girl could wait for that time, or they didn't need to use the bathroom facilities right away. And then it happened to me. I was standing at the blackboard with a number of my compatriots, and I didn't notice the warning signals, if there were any. I didn't notice anything until it was over. The kids whispered among themselves, until the teacher came down the aisle and saw my "crime." She took me out of the room and led me across the hall to a teacher's bathroom. She instructed me to take off my panties. She took them from me and spread them across the radiator. I still remember the words, "Now when your panties are dry, honey, we'll come back for them. All right?"
I nodded vigorously. We returned to see the janitor mopping up the spot. It only took an hour of so for me to be able to retrieve the now-dry underwear.
It was only a one-time thing, and it never happened again - but the kids who had been in that first grade with me never forgot it, and never let me forget it. I was embarrassed to death when the boy who had sat next to me yelled a reminder at a fortieth-year reunion down the table to everyone else.
After that adult embarrassment, I never attended any more reunions. An unintended accident was going to haunt me the rest of my life.
