I believe they can work and have worked. I have two friends that were in a long distance relationship for about 3 yrs and then got married. They met in a game and fell for each other. They just celebrated their 11th anniversary. It depends on how much each wants to devote and how honest they are with each other and keeping constant communication open.
Longest one I was in was 3 yrs, she was in England, me in California. Only thing was, she chose to listen to others and not talk to me about some things. That ended it. Yes, it ended, but if others weren't jealous and bent on destroying us, we might still be together. It takes work, more so than face to face relationships.
