Have you ever borrowed money from someone before & paid it back?

My friend lent $1000 to her good friend 16 years ago, & he’s never made attempts to even pay back some of it. They’re not close anymore, but it’s not because of the money; just life.
The other way round for me.. This is a difficult topic. I have loaned a large amount of money to a family member who had fallen on hard times. They have since recovered however made no attempt to resolve. In my mind I have written it off but it has developed an awkward rift in our relationship.. I have had to do the same with an ex business acquaintance..
@marsbar ah yes, perhaps one day we can commiserate over copious bottles if wine..... (the cardboard box ones as I have to watch my budget!) ...... by zoom (lingerie is an option, or not at all after the third box of wine)

@Majorlatency I’ll just wear my Toronto tee for you. Lol
@marsbar
❤️ *swoon* ❤️

I will have to change the batteries on my pacemaker.
i rarely ever borrow money but when i do, i pay it back. i rarely ever loan money though...... after you get burned a few times, generosity finds its limit. if they want money, i just point them in the direction of the bank. LOL

@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy Lol

I remember Oprah saying that if you plan to lend someone money, just give it to them because you probably won’t get it back.
@marsbar never loan anybody money that you aint prepared to lose. LOL

Yes. I hate owing anything. I'm sorry that this happened to your friend. My parents told me, if you ever lend money, do it with the thought it's not coming back.

@SW-User Can I talk to your parents when I need advice? Based on what you share, they sound very nice and wise 🥰

@SW-User Watch Oprah and you'll receive their acient knowledge
My friend wanted to pay for half of my plane ticket to come and visit her, but I didn’t feel comfortable taking that much money from her. I honestly wasn’t even sure if she was giving it to me or lending it, but regardless I wouldn’t feel comfortable with it. 😂 I feel like stuff like that can often make a friendship go sour.
marsbar · F
@Stark That’s true. Money can definitely make or break relationships/friendships.
summersong · F
Yep, I hate owing anything to anyone.
marsbar · F
@summersong Me too
I always pay back on the very rare occasions i even borrow. I never lend though. If i give money to someone, it is under the assumption they aren't going to pay it back. That way when they don't, no big deal. If they do, a pleasant surprise.

@PrivateHell Agreed

You give me $1,000 and we`ll see how it goes from there. 😬

I try not to ask for loans but I did once and I paid it back as soon as I could

When I loan money I don’t really expect anyone to pay it back, but when they do I happily receive it and use it for my kids

I should add I only loan expendable cash that I don’t need in the immediate future I hate chasing people down to pay me
marsbar · F
@KaysHealingPath Yes, it’s such an awkward situation to have to chase people down.
Iwillwait · M
@KaysHealingPath I love this!

I never borrow money that big, but yes. I always pay the day after.
toddr13 · 46-50, M
I’m usually asked to “lend” money, but if it’s a nominal amount and the person is close enough to me, I say that I will give it to them. And, I generally have them pay it forward by taking care of someone else’s needs or charity when they can do so. If I borrow anything and say that I will return it, I make sure that it happens.
marsbar · F
@toddr13 Great philosophy about paying it forward.
SW-User
Oh wow $1000 is too much!

I remember borrowing money only when I already have the about ready for payback but not in hand. Like when I have credit only but need cash for a payment that does not accept credit cards, and I pay it back as soon as I can because I hate owing anybody anything
marsbar · F
@SW-User That’s good M

Help the needy but ensure the needy is not playing the bluff game. Defaulters have a reputation in the market! No one helps a stranger until the stranger is as good as 'Wolf of Wall Street'.🙂 History has enough evidences that the near and dear ones (not all but some) are more deceiving!🙂
marsbar · F
@SoLeRiMix I agree.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
i always pay back money i borrow
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
Yes, I borrowed money from banks to pay for college, and paid it all back!

😁

When I lease a car I think somewhere in all that paperwork I am borrowing money (why else would they charge interest?). I make all my payments so always pay it back.
marsbar · F
@JoyfulSilence Good for you. lol
Id rather just give people money when they truly need it. I know thats radical these days. Most people wont even ask for help bc of how selfish everyone is so im not gonna hold a loan over somebody's head when theyre already struggling.
marsbar · F
@DarlingSelah That’s nice of you B.
MURD3RM0NK3Y · 26-30, M
No but I've lent people money and never got my money back. I let my cousin borrow like $400 and he never paid me back.
marsbar · F
@MURD3RM0NK3Y Not nice of your cousin to do that
MURD3RM0NK3Y · 26-30, M
@marsbar yeah I let him borrow mine twice actually. I let him borrow that $400 and then I let him borrow $200 but I haven't let him borrow anything after that.

So much time has went by that I just don't care about it anymore
marsbar · F
@MURD3RM0NK3Y You may not care, but you’ll never forget.
Arorin · M
I lent my friend 1000 dollars for his dental. I lived with him and told him he had to pay my part of electric bill till we were even.
marsbar · F
@Arorin That’s smart. At least you got your money back.
Arorin · M
@marsbar Never loan out money expecting to get it back. I was okay with not getting it back before I lent it out. He was a friend that was in a hard spot. Military was going to take action against him if he wasn't deployment ready and they wouldn't pay to fix it since he was reserves and not on orders. He was full time civilian status.
marsbar · F
@Arorin You were a good friend to him.
When I lend someone money, I generally don’t expect to see it again, that way I’m pleasantly surprised when they do pay me back
marsbar · F
Classified · M
I don't even remember borrowing money. Maybe like €5 for if I forgot my wallet.
marsbar · F
@Classified That’s a small amount. 😇
Classified · M
@marsbar That's only for convenience, not because I need it 😋
marsbar · F
I rarely borrow money it mostly was when my friend would pay for drinks and I'd pay him back asap either with money or drinks.
More often I'm the one who's hit up by friends who tell me they're going to pay me back but I'm like that's what you said last time.
Iwillwait · M
I have , and then they burned me, by stealing from me. Needless to say, I have not made an attempt to pay them back.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
I paid my father back when he helped me to buy a car and I repaid my student loans.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
I was about 30 years late paying back 40.00 buck back
TexChik · F
Absolutely ! I paid every cent .
AnthroKenji · 36-40, M
No. Never. Refuse to.
I have never borrowed more than a tenner.

My husband lent a friend at uni about £3000 because his friend wasn't able to pay his fees.

The guy gave him a few hundred back but nothing.
I asked my husband if he regretted it and he said he didn't, the guy would have had to drop out. We still get a Christmas card from him every year
marsbar · F
@InOtterWords It’s good that your husband has accepted it, but it’d still be nice if his friend continued to pay him back.
@marsbar this happened more than 20 years ago, my husband no longer thinks of it
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
Try me, I would like 500 dollars 🤔
marsbar · F
@Justenjoyit I haven’t taught in almost a year. Not gonna happen 😄
