Do you think we focus more on bad news than good news in our society?

Why is that? 🤔
TinyViolins · 31-35, M Best Comment
I think a large part of the problem isn't whether or not the news is good or not, but whether or not the news is actually news. Most media outlets today have financial incentives to create engagement and build loyal audiences, and so often you find that things are given the credibility of journalism without any of the actual diligence and discipline that goes into it.

What we often have is content masquerading as news, news devoid of context in order to substantiate a narrative, or purely partisan attacks meant to edify the self-righteous certainty people have in their ideologies.

What often is viewed as 'bad news' today is little more than cynical punditry meant to serve specific interests. What so often is viewed as 'good news' is usually spun into propaganda or meant to serve as a fluff piece on a slow news day. The end result these companies have isn't to share information, but to sell the illusion of truth in order to retain a customer base.

I don't think news has to be either good or bad, those are merely qualities spun into the news cycle either by the presenter, the writer, or the editor looking to generate views. I think above all news should aim to be impartial by either adhering to a doctrine of fairness and presenting both the positives and the negatives. Or should at least be disciplined enough to not report information until all the facts are known. So often we're given headlines without context and people leap to conclusions based on their ingrained biases.

It doesn't have to be good or bad, infuriating or endearing, just honest. I don't see a lot of that these days

Yes. As humans we're programmed to pay more focus on the bad than the good, for survival, for fight or flight.
But our evolution hasn't caught up to the fact that we do not need such a level of hypervigilance.

@SW-User exavtly. We aren't evolved to handle the amount of world happenings we are exposed to with the highly efficient media we have. Our minds never were developed to know every tragedy that happened in the world today and be able to sort out what that means for us in our tiny communities.
SW-User
@MethDozer Agreed. And even worse, we don't know how to shake off all the tragedy coming at us that we're not prepared to handle. And it mushrooms into something very ugly. I mean we see the effects all around us.

People seem to react to the "bad" more...it's because we live on such a negative planet.😞🌏💥 People that are in tune to auras can tell you that a "nice" persons aura only makes it half way across a room, where a "negative" persons aura fills it up!?
@Peaches Well I really would hope my positive aura would fill up a room. It would feel good to know that 🤷‍♀️.

Much of media is right-wing owned so that means you had all the Trump misery for a long time where those who 'dissent' from their'narrative' were blasted as 'fake news'.
And ever since the election the only 'soundbites' seem to be from elderly white gentlemen so out of touch as to be irrelavent !
@Picklebobble2 I find it funny how some automatically believe that any positive news about Trump that makes him look good is legit, and anything which focuses on his mistakes is automatically fake news.

@latinbutterfly When dealing with media 'content' look at who owns it !
Annoys the cr*p out of me when folk bang on about being 'anti-CNN'. Like it's some left-wing version of Breitbart !

What has been interesting is the total lack of overseas coverage this past year.

I mean we in the northern Hemisphere only know Australia is still going because of their spat with the E:U over vaccines !
Sometimes, what's one person's bad news is another person's good news. Like Trump being out of office. Depends on your perspective.

{@latinbutterfly ] 🤫 no i do not think so granted bad news seems to more prevalent at this moment
Pfuzylogic · M
We had that in the 60s and blamed it on television.
@Pfuzylogic Haha, my parents told me that.

@latinbutterfly cutting edge movies rebelled against the tv taking over lives. If they could have conceived how computers, games and phones would be there to take over! 😂

the heart wants fear
Definitely. That’s what people want to know, unfortunately. It’s the same reason people slow down to gawk at accidents on the freeway.
@bijouxbroussard With all of the bad news that we have heard, just over the past year, I would think that people are sick of it. I know that I am 🤷‍♀️.
@latinbutterfly Me, too. I’d stopped watching the news it was so depressing.

Yes, it's a survival mechanism. Good news is what our brains want's to be the normal. It's what we are programmed to want to be expectable. Bad news on the other hand needs to be remembered and have more focus on from a survival standpoint since it is a sign of danger and a problem that needs to be mitigated.
@MethDozer Yep, like everything we have heard about the Coronavirus 🤷‍♀️.
