Can antidepressants cause paranoia?

Someone I know just started taking them and suddenly thinks they are being watched and everyone is out to get them 😟

I’m no expert but having been on them I can say they can have some side effects. It’s possible they could have taken them and this is causing those thoughts. Then again I feel like that no matter what.

@Captainjackass beginning of what? I don't know if I have medical authority, I told my Mom to try and call
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
@Nebula well even if you don’t they should still know cause who knows what the side effects of what she’s on could be. And paranoia begins slowly over time and builds up like a lot of mental health problems.

@Captainjackass 😟 I'm scared shes going to think Im against her too

How old is this someone? I started feeling that way all of a sudden: paranoid, depressed, mood swings.... schizophrenia hit me out of the blue like a ton of bricks
Nebula · 41-45, F
@Chasingthesun 28, and yeah, that is one of my concerns that the medication may have triggered some underlying condition
Chasingthesun · 46-50, F
@Nebula you may want to gently direct your friend to seeking help. Be very gentle and cautious because she or he may become violent.
Nebula · 41-45, F
@Chasingthesun she actually wants to go to therapy

Yeah it sounds like the antidepressant isn’t right for them and they’re having some sort of psychotic episode or bad reaction 😕
Nebula · 41-45, F
@SW-User I want her to seek outside help because I dont think she needs them to begin with. I know Im not a doctor but a second opinion doesnt hurt, or trying non-medicinal options first, like therapy.
SW-User
@Nebula Well yeah, definitely. Seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist is definitely a good idea. Some people can manage their anxiety or depression really well without medication, others can’t.
Nebula · 41-45, F
@SW-User yeah, I've have pretty bad anxiety all my life and refuse to take anything. I just found other ways of coping that are healthy
Noreaster · F
That's possible. Your friend should contact their health care provider right away and possibly switch to a different medication.
Nebula · 41-45, F
@Noreaster yeah, they are very free with some of these life-altering medications sometimes
Noreaster · F
@Nebula I think the drug companies push them on the doctors.
Nebula · 41-45, F
@Noreaster for sure
SW-User
I dunno..they can exacerbate mental issues for up to 4 weeks after starting them so it could be
Nebula · 41-45, F
@SW-User alright, its my little sister, she has been through a lot this past year or so
SW-User
@Nebula Aw she’s lucky she has you ❤️
Nebula · 41-45, F
@SW-User thank you ❤️
Any comedown leads to paranoia yes?
Nebula · 41-45, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout but she just started them recently
@Nebula is chance a guess that this paranoia isn’t when the meds are working best? 🤔
Nebula · 41-45, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I don't know, she sounds fine on the phone, but in person she will talk about it.
Yes-get the meds changed.
Nebula · 41-45, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales I wish I could do it for her 😟
@Nebula I know the effects anti depressants can have on people-due to family members having been on them.If the paranoia started after the antidepressants were prescribed it is probably not a coincidence.
Nebula · 41-45, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales yeah, thats what Im thinking too
Nebula · 41-45, F
Thank you guys, this has been weighing heavily on me all day
