Stuff that really works on fleas?

I've always used Advantage. It's a drop that you place on the back of the neck. I placed it once a month and never had a problem with fleas on my cat that spends alot of time outdoors. They also make it for dogs.

Wipe the dog down with a rag that is soaked in a solution of 50/50 vinegar water. Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the dogs water as well. For the carpeting, sprinkle borax followed by salt. Leave for an hour then vacuum up. You may have to do this once or twice more.
