If you really were unemployed and really needed a job...

Would you do a temporary assignment that could possibly end at any time without any prior notification, and risk ending up unemployed again?
indyjoe · 56-60, M
It would not be my first choice nor would it be an ideal one...but I have learned over the years that what we often HAVE to do is not what we necessarily WANT to do. I do what I have to do whether I personally like it or not, that's just how life works.

Every job can end at any time without any prior notification. Become indispensable.

@QuixoticSoul I think the best a person can hope for is maybe a couple of weeks notice with possibly some severance pay if they're really lucky.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@SW-User Some companies are better with severance than others. But in an emergency that can evaporate too even if it's in your contract.

Best thing to do is be in demand, and have a healthy emergency fund saved up. Maybe enough to where you can even take a vacation and unwind without stressing about the cost. Going into the next job all frazzled isn't always the best move either.

@QuixoticSoul I guess even if it was in your contract, there isn't much you can do as legal action would cost more than the severance pay.

Yes totally agree, having an emergency fund saved is a very smart idea.

That's the kind of work i'm doing at the moment. Here it's called casual work. Two days before last christmas they told me that there was no work for 6 weeks at least. I was days away from being kicked out of my apartment before i got work again. Over Christmas there was no work i could find anywhere. I am still luckier than many here that have work and a place to live. Many are homeless and don't have the work i have.

@SW-User Well it's a good thing you eventually found work. The holidays are probably the worst time to be unemployed.
SW-User
@SubstantialKick Yes it was a nightmare but luckily my previous employer put me back on again.

I read that you have to be in business to be in business, money aside, I apply it in the way that being in any type of work will lead to other offers coming your way, so yeah I'd take the temporary position and see what comes of it

@pixelmann Yay!

Yes if money is important. Plus it may turn into something permanent
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@MartinTheFirst I know people who have worked for temp agencies and the company that they worked for eventually hired them. Many times companies use temp agencies during a crisis (which is usually temporary) and they hire. It might end up to be the temp.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie The thing is that I'll be done with college in December, so I just need something temporary for the next 6-7 months, maybe...and then I can get a real job lol.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@SubstantialKick Then a temp agency is perfect. I have former classmates that went through that process. And depending on your training, you can get a nice position. Try it.

It would be smarter to take temporary jobs than to take a bad permanent job.

In interviews and resumes you can explain that you were taking temporary work to survive.

If you take a bad perm job and try to leave it right away... that’s a stain on your resume.

It’s an intermediate assignment to my next job, so why not? I don’t want to end up being a liability on the government for whatever time it is.

I did and I have.
I've also had jobs that just ended without any prior warning (and they were not supposed to be temporary)
I would try working for a temporary job. It could be the chance your waiting for. Don't stop trying!!!
