If the US were to fall to civil war, what would we be fighting over?

I see a lot of older folks saying one is coming, but I don't see any differences worth killing each other over. Tribalism between Democrats and Republicans is getting rather extreme, but I don't imagine them seeking to kill each other en masse over it.

Look at how different all of these answers are with no unanimous agreement on any one thing such a civil war would be fought over. That should show you that people don't even know what they would be fighting for and that it's just not going to happen. Like this is the first time tensions between both sides have been at an extreme anyway. That's the American political climate for you - it rises and it drops. The only civil war that's going to happen is the one that's been happening forever now: the right and the left being locked in a perpetual state of senseless, unproductive bickering.

The Constitution. Those of us who want to follow it and those who wish to shred it.

Though we seem to be working ourselves into a Mexican Standoff (no racism implied), if everyone refuses to holster their weapons and go have a beer instead, the result will be a crumbling of government and social systems, social and economic chaos, and an economic crash. If and how the pieces get picked up afterwards, if they do, will be the next chapter of American history.

If sanctuary cities and states believe they have the moral authority to obstruct immigration laws and not cooperate with border and immigration agents, why can't others apply the same moral indignation and refuse to pay taxes and cooperate with the IRS?

I was in Saigon at the time of the cease fire and was privileged to see the underbelly of the South Vietnamese government. From my viewpoint, South Vietnam fell because of its own corrupt government and internal distrust, and not the Communist. The Communist were there to pick up the pieces.

Free speech, the right to bear arms, fascism to name a few.

@ViciDraco Projection! The favorite tool of the left. You were the one trying to be funny and it flopped BIG TIME! You can't face that you are wrong so you project. Just more proof that it is the left that is fascist!

@curiosi citations needed. I'm not claiming the left is perfect. But Trump's Republican party is fascism lite and it has to be pointed out before it goes full blown.

@ViciDraco how about obama nationalizing gm and the banks
When you break it down, it’s hard to pinpoint:
1) Immigration ? Most Trump supporters are immigrants’ descendants; some are actually immigrants themselves who came here legally, but don’t yet understand that Trumps’ concern is more who than how.
2) Religion ? Most Christians and Trump at best see each other as a means to an end—there is nothing in Trump’s history to indicate he’s followed any particular religious creed in his dealings with people.
3) Abortion ? Trump has never really indicated that that’s a hill he’s particularly willing to die on, either. At most, he’s commented on making it a “state’s rights” issue. Making abortion illegal again won’t stop abortions—it’ll only stop safe ones. Women and girls may start dying again, and perhaps that’s acceptable “collateral damage” for the so-called “pro-life”.
I haven't heard anyone talk about civil war. Revolution, yes.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Mamapolo2016 revolution against what, exactly? Or rather to establish what in place of our current system?
@ViciDraco I can't answer that specifically - it always depends on what is festering in the citizens' minds when the fire catches.

If I were going to be designing it - it would be to prevent career politicking and strip the legislature of most of the perks that isolate them from the citizenry and make them elite.
