My new employer, via email, asked if I had something else I wanted to go by, other than my first name. I replied: I usually go by my middle name, but I'll go by [my first name].

Her response: "we can do your middle name, what is it"?.

How are YOU gonna pick what I want to be called ( on my name badge)???

We are allowed to use middle names or nicknames but I am choosing to go by my real first name for once in my life...and she's basically saying no.

Really? Your new employer's an idiot. They should call you by your first name.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Synyster thank you. I think she may have misunderstood my response.

It's that weird kind of rude where people try to be overly accommodating that ends up making them feel uncomfortable. A lot of people don't get it.
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
I do not think that was rude, if you usually go by your middle name maybe she thought she was being accommodating. I do not see you saying she said no, you cannot go by your first name, just tell her you want to go by your first, I doubt she will care. You are reading way too much into it. Had you have simply answered her question without saying you usually go by your middle name there would have been no confusion. If you are trying to go by your first name now why even bring it up.

@iamnikki Yes, I read that, she might have thought that you were trying to be accommodating or something, who knows, but by saying I usually go by my middle name but I will go by my first you muddied the waters. Anyway, I do not think she was being rude, she is doing her job and accommodating people that might want to go by another name than their first is all. I would guess she asks everyone that question.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Lackwittyname maybe i did cause confusion. I was trying to give a nicer answer besides a simple " no". Those always seem harsh to me. Maybe its just me.

Thanks for being respectful.
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
@iamnikki Thanks for being respectful back and listening. Well maybe a "no" might have been harsh, but "No, my first name is good" might have sounded better.

What's going on with names lately...my co-worker who's been there just over a month now has changed his name 3 times.

We often project our own insecurities onto others without realizing it. It sounds as if she is insecure and thought you may be as well. Just trying to be polite by using your first name. In her heart she was trying to encourage you saying it's ok if you wish to change your mind.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
She might have been thinking you'd prefer your middle name but that policy wouldn't allow it, and reassuring you that you could use it. But the way she worded it was poor. I'd have said that I don't have any problem with you using either of your names and just to let me know which one you chose.

@TheBillyMadisonJ i did already. I told her exactly what i said above. Imi want to be called what i want to be called just like every one else
NeuroticByNature · 41-45, F
You told her you use your middle name. It sounds like she took that as you wanting to be called by your middle name.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@NeuroticByNature i put exactly what i put above. That i usually do go by my middle, but I'll go by my first...because i want to now. Most people dont even know my first name , including family because i never use it. I dont want to die and no one knows my name...
NeuroticByNature · 41-45, F
@iamnikki i understand but I think she misunderstood you. I dont think she meant it to be rude.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@NeuroticByNature agree. Sounds rude though, or poorly worded rather.
TimSummers · M
That sounds really strange because most companies have a policy on what to put on a name badge. Even if that policy allows you to choose.
Isn't she giving you the choice to decide?
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Pitchblue i already told her " i used to go by my middle but id like to go by my first" she replied " we can do your middle name - what is it" . read above..

I think she was trying to accomodate your wishes, since you mentioned that you usually go by your middle name.
Budwick · 70-79, M
Hmm, I don't know.
What's your first name?
