What would you do here?

I heard a news story on the radio this morning, and it got me thinking about things. So here's the scenario:

Say you're rafting down a river and land on a small island. There are posted signs that clearly say no trespassing. But, you're in the middle of nowhere and there's no one around, so you go exploring. On your short hike, you see a human skeleton that clearly has been here for years. Do you report it?

On one hand, it's a dead person, and they deserve to get closure. It's unlikely anyone would ever find this spot due to being "off-limits" so chances are, you're the only one who knows it's here, or will ever know it's here.

On the other hand, you were trespassing, and you don't know who owns the land, why it's off-limits, or what the cause of death was. For all you know, it could be a gangster's dumping ground for bodies, or a government-sealed area for contamination, or something. Either way, you'll probably be in trouble for trespassing.

So, do you report it to the authorities, or just slip away back into your boat and pretend you didn't stop here?

report anonymously then

@cherokeepatti I see I missed an option. I keep forgetting you can report things anonymously.

I would feel duty bound to report it. There's someone out there missing their relative or their partner or their friend, and if I didn't report that I'd think about it forever.

@CheshireCatalyst That's how I would feel. If I have to suffer some kind of repercussion for being where I shouldn't, then so be it; at least my conscience would be clear.

Oh I would have to report it. Definitely. And I wouldn't worry about the consequences. Of course, you could report it anonymously and nobody would know it was you.

@dunpender Really? Because I served on a grand jury a few years ago, and I heard a lot of cases on criminal trespassing.

@dunpender Hmm, you might be right about that. I'll have to look into it more.
