@Wraithorn well... This maturity came pretty recently. I had to feel destroyed, be sad, lost, alone, and angry first.

@ForeverGrowingOld That's interesting. Considering my question and what you have just said I can see the meaning in this quote which now suddenly popped into my mind :

"What hurts you, blesses you. Darkness is your candle" -- Rumi.

@Wraithorn that's an interesting quote. Not something I entirely agree with.. but it's close. I think that the "hurt" is the ignition. I'm not sure if that means the "darkness" is the "candle" or not.
