I Want a Home to Call My Own
Everyone has a different story about home ownership. What is yours?
Mine is that in 1998 I bought a modest house with my first ex-partner not long after the birth of our first child and when we seperated 15 yrs later she bought me out of my share of the mortgage. Since then I have not owned a property again and have rented ever since.
That particular ex got married to our then-neighbour and they still own the house. Her affair with that person is the primary reason we split up.
The house was purchased for A$185k after we won it at auction. My first ex's parents lent us A$20k to contribute to the deposit which we paid back to them concurrently to paying back the mortgage. I think it would be worth around A$400k now at current market conditions.
My second ex-partner owns her own house and I believe has now paid it off. Don't know what she bought it for but I know she bought it in 2007 with a fair chunk of help from her parents.
I'm 51 now, and expect that I'll not be in a position to consider buying my own place until I'm at least 60. Sadly I won't get any inheritances and have no financial portfolio of shares to draw on.
