French drains (a perforated pipe in a gravel bed in the ground under the drip-line of the roof) are an alternative to gutters.
Some gutters are built-into the roof; i.e. not a metal trough right at the edge of the roof. Done correctly they are nearly invisible...

I wouldn't think that would be legal. It's got to be in some kind of building code somewhere! I mean, if you get too much water under a structure, then you could erode the ground it sits on and it could sink. Or get mold on the underside and rot away the support frame. That's not good!

Maybe they don't have a basement?...their lucky if they don't....water management is one of the worse parts of having a home....it's worrisome.

@Snowvixen I forgot about those.....my next house will be on stilts....
@luctoretemergo yeah the house we gettin is on a hill, but has no gutters and water under the house cause their is no drainage system... stagnant water hell there.

@luctoretemergo Even if you don't have a crawlspace, having your house on a slab doesn't make a design immune to needing to get the water away. In fact, being on a slab is worse than having a crawl space, because your floor is literally sitting right on the ground, so groundwater is YOURwater ...er...your floorwater...you know.

Some roofs are designed to work without gutters, though they tend to be used in more desert style places with little rain.

Thats not good, i guess they dont get much rain🤷🏻♂️
@Tminus6453 👀 i have seen a bunch in the most rainy places in the states.

They don't sell any at WalMart

Yes, **IF** the ends of the gutter runs are long enough (typically, not!), installed so that they actually stay installed through (e.g.) storms & trucks, etc. or they can also be buried, etc.
Gathering the water is step one. Getting it away from the house is the job of the last bit of downspout...

Gutters get clogged with leaves and other debris. You have to go on your roof to clean them out. All the time
SomeMichGuy · M
@CereBellum Yes. There are various good leaf guard solutions.
Of course, if you have too many big deciduous trees near your home, @Jeffrey53, perhaps you need to have the trees trimmed back so as to not be as able to shower your roof with such gutter-clogging leaves...

@CereBellum that’s what I hear from people who don’t have gutters on their house. I have gutters on my house
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@SomeMichGuy no trees around my house. I have no problem with my gutters
