I feel the same with my mum and dad and just accept the spanking.

My mom is a grudge holder. She can be mad about something for a very long time. She will remember it forever, and use it as a weapon when the opportunity arises years later.
As far as I know, there have been no spankings or other such punishments to any of us (now adult) kids in many years.

But it's good that you understand the dynamics and just do what's best all around. If I were your parent, I would be very proud of you.
