I Am Morbidly Obese

It was like two worlds colliding at one point when I was watching TV the other night. It was some documentary about the space race, showing newsreel clips from the '60s. Everyone back then looked so thin, healthy and athletic, especially the younger ones.

And then there was me on the other side -- a young man who modern life, food and conveniences had rendered so fat and lazy that he could hardly bring himself to reach for the remote.

You have my empathy. Last year, I realized that in order to have an active life I would need to lose 80 lbs. At my age, with some health problems, it hasn't been easy. I have lost about 18 lbs.through swimming and eating a low carb low calorie diet. It is really hard for me! I struggle daily. I use Nutrisystem food for most of my diet. Preparing food is a major problem because I live in one room in a rooming house and share a kitchen with 5 other people.

Weight loss is essential for me. If I don't do this, I know I am headed for a nursing home, and I have a lot I want to do in my life. So it's really important.

If you need me as a diet buddy, please feel free to message me and we can stay in touch.

Don't hate yourself. You have a medical problem, not a character flaw.

I felt like you last May. I too am morbidly obese, but last May I started walking. At first I could only walk 200-400 years not just because I am overweight, but because I also have 2 auto-immune disorders that make walking painful. I kept walking every day. Now I walk 3-4 miles every single day. Walking made me stop being hungry and I started eating a whole lot less. Since last May I have also lost 45 pounds. I still have over 100 pounds to lose, but I know by this time next year I will have met my goal. My best advice is just start walking.

Then start working out and dieting. I was obese too and I managed to overcome it, if I can do it then anyone can, all it takes is discipline, will and an understanding that no one is going to help you, nothing is going to change if you just stay on the sofa. Only you can help you.

@Windsylph A joy coach? I've never heard of that before.

I was in his position, I understand the mentality, the self pity. There's no need to feel sorry for someone when they're already feeling more than sorry enough for themselves. Pity doesn't get you anywhere.

You need to do both, you can't out work a bad diet and a good diet alone isn't enough. I tried just doing both and it failed.

I do agree with you there about the diet, I do not even like to call it a diet to most people because thats not what it is. A diet means cutting out, when its really about changing what you eat. I used myfitnesspal in order to both track my calories and my weight, it really helped to understand what my limit was and from there I worked out just what was right for me to eat. I began reading about sugars and just how damaging they are and switched to all organic and with my fitnesspal was able to work out the exact portions I needed.

As for working out, I agree with you. When I started I could barely do anything, working out does not mean just hitting the gym. Go for walks, get started by going out there and building your confidence up slowly, its easy to stay inside and on the sofa because you're afraid. Fear will just make you a slave forever however and the truth is no one really cares anyways, everyone is lost in their own little world worried about themselves. When you understand that going out is alot easier.

When you finally hit the gym you can't just start alone, find a personal trainer or someone who can show you the gym and get you started. Thats what I did and from there I started working out alot with my brother, I was lucky to have someone who could do that with me.
