Why would my modem start blinking like a Christmas tree and boot me off spontaneously at certain times during the day? It's brand new.

Just a guess, but I'm going with a power issue. Everything tight, right? Power supply cord in good shape? Not pinched?

@NotQuiteRite Mighty kind of you. I get the impression you're a vet, or you did some kind of first responder work.

@NotQuiteRite Thanks for jumping in. What I meant by a pinched power cord was obviously not a single pinch, but a power cord that has been damaged. That damage could cause a break of connectivity inside the insulation which would cause an intermittent interruption to the power supply. That would trigger a router re-boot and the "light test" on all the LEDs. Seen it happen a few times.

@puck61 Puck -- If the lighting up of the router is singular and momentary, then I'm going with spontaneous router reboots brought on by something and I had hypothesized a power supply issue. It the lights blinking is an ongoing issue (you didn't specify), then I'd lean toward NQR's theory of internet activity, likely from some kind of malware. And there are multiple free AV solutions out there. But this shouldn't cause you to get a drop in connectivity, just a slow down.

mine went out for 6 to 12 hours once , the technician found a broken wire inside my phone jack box on the wall , also there might be a small reset button underneath the modem or router you could try that but you'll have to wait a few minutes for it to reactivate

@NotQuiteRite: No! That would suck! I 'am' in an unfamiliar place. I just moved to a small apartment in town after ten years in the same place. You might be right.

I am a little surprised its f*ing up in a new computer that it probably came on though. It killed my old laptop after it downloaded without my permission, I had said no like 100 times. But it's on my new laptop and no problems. Knock wood.

It could be set to release the IP address at a set time or times everyday.

Cable or dsl?

@puck61: I assume they had you go through all the standard troubleshooting steps?
@chris62ca: Yeah. It did it for about 45 minutes this morning, and it was doing it about 20 minutes ago....They had my unjack the power cable for 10 seconds and all that.

@puck61: They will do that before they send out a tech.
