there are new innovative technologies being developed that are more natural and basically turn the body into compost. there is also some kind of water technique but I really don't know anything about it. there are new alternatives, that's all I know.

Local laws vary but in some areas you can be buried in shroud.
It should be something you can request in your will but I dont think its honored. Even unclaimed bodies are embalmed. I'm not sure the legalities in the US
