Can you recommend a trustworthy and free ad-blocking software?

I understand that many websites rely on ad revenue, however, it's incredibly difficult for me to read articles on websites that display colorful or "moving ads" (gifs or videos).

Can anyone recommend a free and reliable ad-blocking software that they've used before? I'm scared I might download a virus.

@PastelHearts1412 AdBlock Plus isn't bad, there was some reports a while ago, that the owner was taking money from Ad companies to allow their ads through, so people moved to different open-source versions, but its not a bad product.

I use uBlock Origin. I believe Chrome, Firefox and IE have a version of this.
