Should we nationalize social media platforms?

Should Twitter and Facebook be regulated as public utilities? There's been a lot of talk about Twitter banning people because of their opinions, but as a private company, they have the freedom to do that. If they were regulated by the government, then they would become de jure public spaces and would be subject to the first amendment, thus no more banning people because of their opinions.

Given the influence these sites have on politics and elections, maybe it's not such a crazy idea.

The government's censorship would be like a hundred times worse than Twitter's.

@VeronicaPrincess I think it would be harder for them to get away with it, but who knows. We haven't really tested this.

No, and I think the opposite would happen. There would be even less freedom if these sites were regulated by the government. Maybe not right away, but depending upon who is in power, people's freedom would become more and more curtailed, little by little.

I know, the First Amendment is supposed to guarantee freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean that everyone who happens to be in power will honor that. Some people like to think of the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, as a "living document" and therefore open to interpretation, which pretty much means that they can twist it to mean whatever they want it to mean. Or so it seems to me.

How about the other 200 countries that use social media?

@SW-User Good question. I guess that's why China bans social media except for their state-run versions.

It would save the NSA a lot of effort for sure
I foresee an internet shutdown eventually.. things have gone to shit for the left since we can talk to each other without their MSN filter

No, while I don't agree with them banning people, they should be tried in the court of public opinion.

Absolutely - although the data collection from socila media is a huge public issue. This vast trove of detailed information on our behaviour is really dangerous for anyone, including a government, to have.
