What are the pros and cons of an Earth with more landmass?

Waterways are great, because they facilitate transportation, specifically shipping. But nothing beats real estate, assuming it arable, habitable and/or mineral-rich. And it seems the oceans of the world could fit a lot more of it, without getting in the way of the freighters and the tankers. What would be the drawbacks?
