If someone responds with sarcasm to your post, do you automatically take it as hostility instead of recognising it as sarcasm?

Sadly, there is no "sarcasm" font (nor a "joke" font). I truly believe if there were, the number of arguments on the internet would be reduced by 80%.
@xixgun
Ehh, sarcasm can still be used to make sleazy attacks tho... And all said with a smile and hidden behind the excuse of using sarcasm.

@SapphicHeart True, but more often than not is recognized as the passive aggressive bullshit that it is
@xixgun
I'm not going into any debate whether it's passive aggressive BS or not, it is what it is and context still matters. It's all. My reaction on your comment has to be seen in that light and not believing in 80% of arguments on internet would be avoided this way. I doubt it very much with what I've seen from people using sarcasm in arguing passive aggressively or not. The people using it in arguments deliberately have no issues doing the same while using the font, maybe they'd enjoy it even more. I can't tell but have a hunch.

Always *serious look*

It’s hard to recognise sarcasm on the net. Tone plays quite an important role along with facial expressions.
People are getting nastier in general. You have to be careful with gag answers. I just had someone disproportionately react to a gag answer. He might have just had a horrible day too, for all I know. I recognize sarcasm, and as long as it's not mean spirited, I respect it. Even if it is mean spirited, I don't mind as long as it's funny.
@Backtoscratch Whatever gets you through the day, dear.

Sarcasm is usually intended to be hostile.

@Backtoscratch we both appear to be from the UK. Sarcasm is mostly used as a thinly disguised "put down". Perhaps it's a generational thing, I am probably 30 years older than you. Could it be one of the reasons older people consider youngsters to be disrespectful whilst younger people consider old folks to be grumpy?

Sarcasm rarely works in written form. Especially from unrecognizable 'characters'.

Usually recognize it because I use it a lot myself

Depends on their tone and choice of words ..

Nah. I enjoy the sarcasm.
It depends on what mood I’m in
