Why do people on this site use the word "gay" as some kind of insult?

Why are they that homophobic in 2019?
SW-User
because they're still mentally in middle school

@Callmyname I'm a British-Canadian dual national, which is why I know a lot about both the UK and North America. I live in Canada at the moment, where there's a huge amount of exposure to American media and culture.

@Callmyname Well, America's not all bad, not by far. There are plenty of great people and the country regularly accomplishes great things. So many groundbreaking things originated there. It just has really bad internal social and structural problems that have been festering for centuries with seemingly no solution or end in sight.

Anyway, this is miles and miles off topic. I don't want to keep spamming people's notifications.

I see. Now "gay" will soon be on the list of words we're not supposed to say. May I suggest something to succeed it like floofy? The good folks at Urban Dictionary say - "Floofy generally describes something --usually an inanimate object-- as being light and airy."

@Callmyname That's not my problem. You want to find out about stuff, you gotta walk the rough paths and be willing to take some cuts and bruises from time to time.

Anyway, I'm done here. You asked a question, you got an answer. You're welcome.

They grow up learning it and because their intention is not homophobic, they believe their actions are not homophobic.

Of course, the hard rule is that nobody gives a shit about your intentions.

@Callmyname Milwaukee is far from small. I'm in the US where the word gay is used as slang for all kinds of things. The question you just asked makes my point. People don't use the word gay with its actual definition.

I would be insulted if someone called me gay

LGBTQ are still a huge numerical minority in the population . The media makes it sound as though they are mainstream majority , but that’s just not true . Many people are not with it , and some cultures kill gays on sight . When something is weird or doesn’t work right ... like a phone or a computer it’s called gay . As for people we are all aware of homosexuality ... most don’t approve as evidenced by their heterosexual life style , but then most don’t complain about it . Bigotry remains alive and well .

Uh oh, it’s the word police.

Seriously though, gay means lame in most circles. It’s not used as a slur. The word you’re looking for is fag. Which could be insulting to some, though people should be free to say whatever they want.

@Djac17 Still not s smart as you think you are. Would you like to try again?
chrisCA · M
@Imsleepy "I’m an American" My. Did you thump your chest as you typed that? 😏
Imsleepy · 31-35
Nope. Simply being an American is enough. I didn’t feel the need to rub it in anymore. @chrisCA

Kinda has been used as an insult for quite some time. Times have changed and people need to as well.

But yes people are still homophobic, racist, sexist and all the other "ists" in 2019. Some people just aren't so blantant about it. It most likely will never change.
TheunderdogofNY · 36-40, M
@Callmyname Perhaps but that's relative to the people you know. Other people are different.

But let me conclude with this, people can act however they choose to. Their reasoning doesn't need to make sense to me or you. Moving forward you hold people accountable for their bullshit. It will (hopefully) get people to change if only for seeing consequences for their actions. The internet is a place where you can be a shitty person anonymously. Some people enjoy it for that aspect some people are just upfront without the need for anonymity.

@Callmyname We could probably go back and forth with this. But believe me...I know what I know from my own personal experiences. I'll leave it at that.
Carver · 31-35, F
I use it tongue-in-cheek and with a bit of irony since I'm LGBT too. 🤷‍♀️

@Callmyname Well, it's not just the internet that's like that. I'd say that's a sort of conflict that's been going on for as long as there's been humor.

I'm gay and I don't really care. My friends will sometimes describe something negative as "gay" and then say "no offense Rylan" and I never took offense. lol. Just my two cents.

Homophobic bigots gonna bigot. It's hilarious when they find out their "insults" are meaningless and do nothing to harm their intended targets.

I have found that British homosexuals also use the word gay as an insult.
I use to find it insulting but I don't care about it now.

@Callmyname A few people are too reluctant to change. They will target you no matter what. It may be like bell curve distribution. A few people are too liberal, majority are moderate and a few are extremely conservative.

Here is one for you " In India you can't really marry anyone of choice unless he/she of your caste and you have parents' approval. Legally you can but socially you can't. And in India societal changes are so slow it seems at times they aren't changing at all ".
