How would you gauge someone's popularity on SW?

Is it profile views, amount of comments the user receives on posts, number of Friends/Followers (though this is sometimes hidden as is profile views)...

What is your formula?

No this is not a "popularity contest" question... I ask because I saw previous posts asking who the popular users are and I'm trying to understand HOW they come to their conclusions.
SW-User
Sadly, we're all seperated into cliques, but I don't view anyone here as popular. Anyone who thinks they are, needs a reality check. Idk what it is that excites these people so much about their profile views either...
SW-User
@iMystery I guess, it sure seems like a party when it hits big.🤷‍♀️
Byron8by7 · M
@SW-User I can go for days without receiving any profile views. I interact with a few people here and there on a limited basis and I would never expect "popularity."
SW-User
@Byron8by7 I understand that one.
Peaceful · F
Profile views are generated by controversy, using your real pic as a female or saying provacative things.

Comments on a post could be for all those reasons I've mentioned...

I think people get popular here by posting a lot, being here often and hopefully being kind people.

@Peaceful Ignore that idiot.. he has been reported.
iMystery · M
@SW-User He has already been reported.
SW-User
I don't think it's profile views; I think it's how frequently you post that gets you "known" here. How well in all honesty, do we really "know " people here, though?
SW-User
@iMystery this is my third account. I've left, and came back.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
@iMystery And how many of those views are people who just viewed their profile to block them?
iMystery · M
@TeresaRudolph71 Exactly another reason why I think profile views cannot be used as a metric to gauge popularity
SW-User
I think it is in how everything about them is noticed and how fast. Or how many people and how many times they get mentioned by others. Or they just have to make a small request and many people rush to help.
To me these are popular people because they are in demand by many.

I don't know what makes someone popular. Some people are just liked enmasse.
SW-User
@Atlantis I know I am not. I am happy with that.

iMystery · M
@SW-User I am inclined to agree on what you have described as this is what I was thinking too.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
I have no idea. There are people I enjoy seeing here more than others. Yes, I think so. Some people are more visible here than others too.
iMystery · M
@SweetMae So its a personal preference then you would say?
I don't care for anyone's popularity around here. All that matters is how they behave themselves towards me and other members here. For the same reason I have hidden all my counters, it's simply not interesting, or shouldn't be to decide how "popular" I should be someone individually.
iMystery · M
@SapphicHeart Personal respectful interaction is what does it for you then?
@iMystery
That wasn't what I said. If anything I said it was that it's on an individual level, and that I don't care for the popularity among the masses
iMystery · M
@SapphicHeart Ok I see.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
All of the above, I think, although some of the profile views could be people who just viewed their profile so they could block the person.

I think first the number of followers, and then the number of people who respond to their posts, and how kind most of those people are to them.

Oh, and one more thing. When someone mentions them in a post, do they mention them in a positive way, or in a negative way? There's a group called "I Want to Pay Tribute," in which you can mention someone you particularly admire or like here. Who gets mentioned in those posts? And who gets called out in a negative way? Those people are probably less popular.
iMystery · M
@TeresaRudolph71 Users can be popular for "good" and "bad" alike🤷‍♂️
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
@iMystery Then I guess it depends on what you mean by popularity. There's popularity, and then there's notoriety. Some who have achieved a significant level of notoriety have a core group of people who stick with them long-term, and others who are charmed by them for a while. But overall, I think their level of popularity (how well-liked they are by people all over the site) tends to go down over time.
Bubbles · 36-40, F
I have often found this idea of being popular on an anonymous site filled with anonymous people as a silly concept. That being said, I would judge popularity based on how many replies people get on their posts. I would say popularity should be judged on the one following criteria: If you comment on their post and end up turning off notifications on the post, because so many people are commenting - that person is popular lol. Personally I want to be as unknown as possible, as it seems that the more popular you are perceived to be, the more harassment you get.
iMystery · M
@Bubbles 🤣 I turn off my notifications for ANY comment I make on ANY user post because I ALWAYS expect many comments on others' posts LOL
SW-User
@iMystery I often do the same. I have to.🤦‍♀️
iMystery · M
@SW-User 🤣
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
I have never given it any thought...I wouldnt put it down to profile views though, because fact is if I put pics of my naked body I am going to have my views soar - does that make me popular - nope.
iMystery · M
@Fantabulous Yeah, profile views would probably play a part, but what if the view count is hidden?

How can that then be used as a means of gauging popularity?
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
No clue. I just think people do the site their way. Some of my favorite folks hardly ever post anything on their page but they play my song or word games with me or we talk in PM. They are popular with me but maybe not overall.
SW-User
I don't gauge it, we are all equal here in my opinion

I'm of the opinion that this kind of talk is nonsense 🤷‍♀️
iMystery · M
@SW-User Yeah the idea of those "popularity contest" type of posts are nonsense.. but I am simply asking HOW users gauge popularity of those they believe are popular.
SW-User
@iMystery well yes, I understood that.. I guess I was just giving my opinion

I think views are based on how often and what a person posts
I think gifts are reciprocated generally so a person with 200 probably also gave out 200
But none of those things means a person is popular 🤷‍♀️
iMystery · M
@SW-User True... I agree.
summersong · F
I think everyone has their own view of who’s popular and who isn’t but to me it’s the people whose names are always mentioned in “who’s the most X” posts and/or who gets the most comments/replies on their posts *and* on other people’s. Profile views just mean someone is around a lot or they’re controversial so to me it’s more a gauge of being recognized than being popular.

In the long run, though, I wish people cared more about who is kind and a good friend than who is popular 🤷‍♀️
iMystery · M
@summersong Yeah there should be a "Kindness" metric
Profile views, amount of comments the user receives on posts, number of Friends/Followers combined
iMystery · M
@YukikoAmagi I like the combination idea, but what if profile views AND friends/follows are hidden (as many users have set)?

THEN how can those be used to gauge popularity?
I feel that if many people know you then that doesn't mean popularity, they might know you for being a jerk or a troll so it's hard to gauge what popularity is.
iMystery · M
@Duckduckgo I agree
How active they are and the responses they get.

I think well known is probably a better term than popular for my mental formula.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
I agree. There are people on here all the time that just lurk and don’t post or reply but I think if you interact a lot your name may be well recognized.@Callmewhatyouwill
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
I think the best way to measure it is:

How many people regularly check on your profile to see what you asked when they were away?
iMystery · M
@CheshireCatalyst Yeah, though I think Views would also fall into that category
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
I wouldn’t know, I don’t keep track of it..
iMystery · M
@Deadcutie Lol I was actually... but I just wanted to point out yours 😅
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@iMystery some bitch and a couple hater trolls reported me and now I’m in the doghouse for a month
iMystery · M
@Deadcutie 🤣 That's popular!
Riverman · 56-60, M
It really doesn't even matter to me at all. I just like joking around.
iMystery · M
@Riverman 👍 I like keeping things simple
Nindybear · 31-35, F
The number of people who crush on you
iMystery · M
@Nindybear 😄 Good metric lol
TexChik · F
I think higher profile views ( over 1000) is more of a credibility issue . If someone has made posts , interacts , and is nice ... what else is there ?
TexChik · F
@iMystery what I worry about are catfish and fake accounts. I’ve had to deal with both . By 1000 views a person usually is as they appear to be .
iMystery · M
@TexChik Lol good point, though I have seen about 2 users with 1000 and above views being outed as catfish accounts lol
TexChik · F
@iMystery yep ! After learning the lessons of EP , if I suspect I just block quietly and move on
By their kind words!
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
I have an idea how we can find an answer to that, but I haven't mentioned it to the admin yet.
iMystery · M
@NankerPhelge Some kind of formula?

Or a simple vote?
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@iMystery I'm not revealing it yet. I want to mention it to the admin first. If they reject the idea I'll tell you what it was after that.
iMystery · M
@NankerPhelge Fair enough 👍
SW-User
Those who are popular engage people, don't act like lady's and gentlemen and show body parts
iMystery · M
@SW-User 🤣 Yeah many are popular for "other" reasons.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Maybe by how much they post or reputation I guess.
iMystery · M
@Keepitsimple Yip you kept it simple... way to live up to your username 👍
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Sometimes I’m good at that 😉@iMystery
iMystery · M
@Keepitsimple It's how I always try to keep all things 😉
Comments and hearts.
iMystery · M
@LittleBlueAngelBoy Lol if this metric was used, I imagine many fake accounts would be created to gain "fake" hearts 🤣
It would be a mixture, profile views, followers, gifts, number of people they message with....but do people really care about it?
iMystery · M
@InOtterWords Based on some questions that have been posted in the past (and as recently as earlier today), I would say, yes some people do care about it lol
@iMystery i very much have a different sense of self. I have a few close friends, those i let in. I have friends i have a laugh with and i have people i know and get on with. The rest of them hate me. It was like that in RL and it is lime that on here. I was nevwr part of the "in-crowd" and i nevwr had a desire to be. I think people see that and end up just accepting who i am.
