I'm Back!

I don't know where else to post this except under "questions". Yes, I am a tech-illiterate!

I just got back home in Michigan after 10 days in England - the last four of which had me abed with a severe uncontrolled cough and diarrhea severe enough that I had to visit a surgery in St. Ives.

If there is a better place for an announcement like this, please let me know!!

Before I left, I posted that my presence on SW would go dark for that 10 days, as I was informed that there would be an international data charge of $100.00 per gig per month (after the first free gig) and I could not take the chance of using my iPhone over there.

Actually, I could have safely used it in a WiFi zone, but - again, being a tech-incompetent - I did not even take the chance there.

So, to all and sundry, Quakertrucket is now back in town and ready to reply and respond to all requests, replies, comments, posts, or, if one prefers, simple abuse.

As of 4:00 AM this morning, I am back in the United States and back in the SW.

Other than being sick, I had a great time, thank you very much. Every English person with whom my wife - on whose phone we paid an extra $60.00 per month to cover international charges - was FANTASTIC!!!!!

So, here I am!

I understand. I was not upset, just curious.

There is a lot of truth about what you wrote.

By the way, as a Submissive, I do almost all of the household chores - vacuuming, dusting, clothes, dishes, etc. - though only some of the cooking as my wife is an excellent cook and loves to cook.

My wife lived in London for a year back in the Eighties and says it is her favorite city in the world. She worked in the National Health System at Westminster Hospital. I loved the sights, the scenery, the history, and the people - except that I am somewhat of a hermit and felt overcome by the crowds in London, especially on the tube.

And, my wife's grandfather came from St. Ives to work in the copper mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when the tin mines in Cornwall started closing in the late 1890's. She has been to England about 8 times over the years for a "London fix" and to do genealogy in Cornwall. However, she had not been there in the 19 plus years of our marriage until this trip.

She says London is her "spiritual home", and that Cornwall is "the land of her people".

We had many plans for our four days in Cornwall - the Eden Project, the Isles of Scilly, and Penzance (by the way, her research showed that two ancestors had been hung as pirates/wreckers). My becoming ill put the kibosh on many of these plans.

She did leave me in bed in St. Ives last Wednesday and went to the Cornish Genealogical Society near there. She found the boat that her grandfather sailed to the United States on. Unfortunately, she also found that he left a wife - Nell - not her grandmother, whom he never returned for.

We did see the Tate Cornwall - modern art - on Tuesday just before I got sick.

Our plan was for her to be my tour guide for 10 days as I had never been to England, and then to stay for four more weeks by herself to catch up with friends, enjoy the ambiance, soak in the sights in London, and to do more genealogy.

She is going to Redruth for a few days to do more research at some repository.

My wife dropped me off at Heathrow yesterday at noon.

She sent me a e-mail about the snow. This does not really bother us as we live in northern Michigan where we average 120 inches a year - our record being 189 inches four winters ago.

When she lived in London, her favorite watering hole was the "100 Club" where the "Sex Pistols" played. We visited it a week ago Saturday and spent an hour or so speaking with the proprietor - whose father owned it when she was in attendance way back when. We planned to spend our last night in London there listening to a tribute band - the Sex Pistols Experience - but I was coughing way too much for our - or the crowd's enjoyment. I told her she could go by herself if she wished, but she chose to spend our last evening together.

Just realizing that there is a "tribute" band for the Sex Pistols sure makes me feel old, as I was 25 to 30 years of age when they started.

Everyone we met was fantastically friendly and helpful!

I didn't mean to run on so long, but I guess that I have diarrhea of the finger as well as if the bum!

Enjoy your day!

They would have been throwing rocks at my wife's family, not mine - or so I think.

I have never been much interested in where my own family came from in particular, and have been more interested in where we are going.

I have always thought of heritage as being one more way to divide people: "My ancestors were better than yours"; "Were not"; "Were too"; ad infinitum.

Actually, not having any children, I am more interested in where we as a people, as Humanity, are going.

And, with the election of the monumentally incompetent, inferiority-complexed, asinine jerk that we - the citizens of the United States - have elected to be president, I am not too hopeful for our future as a cohesive people or nation.

Last mention on our trip. One third of the people in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have Cornish roots, having come to work in the copper mines. The most popular food item there is the pasty, brought by the Cornish miners.

When I was still feeling well in St. Ives, we had pasties in the land of their origin - and loved them. I also like sardines - similar to pilchards - but could not find any place that had "Starry Gazey" pie on the menu - much to my disappointment.

I also like both Vegemite and Marmite, which can only be ordered from Amazon in the USA, so I brought back four 250 mg jars of Marmite. I checked the suitcase so it would not be tossed by security at Heathrow.

I also got to the land that begat both of my lifetime religions - I was raised Methodist, but have been Quaker for about 40 years.

Best wishes,

Quakertrucker
