Time Off

My wife are flying out of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada to Heathrow in London, England on Thursday morning.

My wife is going to be my tour guide for two weeks - London and Cornwall - as she lived in London for a year back in the Eighties and has returned several times. Also, her grandfather emigrated from Cornwall to work at the copper mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and she has gone back a number of times to do genealogy.

I am flying back after two weeks, while she is staying another four weeks to see friends in London and to do genealogical research in Cornwall.

As soon as we cross into Canada from Michigan, I am turning off my iPhone. The problem is chiefly in England. The international charges are $2.00 per minute for phone calls, 50 cents per text, and an incredible $100.00 per gigabyte - roughly one movie - for data (although the first gigabyte is free).

We paid $60.00 per month to AT&T for two months for my wife's phone. This will give her unlimited texts, and will reduce calls to 35 cents per minute. Unfortunately, it won't affect data charges.

We are only adding the overseas service to her phone as we won't need both phones, and she will be there six weeks total to my two.

She is going to only use data in WiFi zones. Given the high data costs, I am not even going to risk that. The guy at our local AT&T office said that it is not at all unusual for people to return from trips to Europe for a couple of weeks and find unexpected $1,000.00 charges on their next bill.

So, after tomorrow evening at home, I will be going dark on SW - actually on everything, but this is about the only site I go on - for about 14 days.

I will give a trip report upon my return home.
