I Like People Who Can Handle Different Opinions
What Being Open Minded Is Really About
I want to post my thoughts in this group here hoping that there is not yet such a group. This group is about being open minded.
For me an open minded person is someone who is able to deal respectfully and clearly with different positions without being wishy washy. Being open minded does not mean that I am indifferent.
I do believe that there is such a thing as absolute truth - like "personal revenge is always wrong" or "everyone human is mortal." There are in my opinion bad songs like those encouraging violence and abuse, there are wrong beliefs like "cheating does not hurt anyone as long as nobody finds out" or the belief of racists just to name two. No one can love everyone. But we should respect everyone.
To reject someone's opinion and call it wrong does not necessitate that I am closed minded. It just means that I have a position and I stand up for my position. Rosa Parks was not closed minded when she refused to get up.
I’m afraid that many stories in the group "I like people who are open minded" are not so much about being closed minded as they are about avoiding tensions and conflicts. The problem starts when someone feels personally threatened or rejected by the other opinion. The problem is not seeing that rejecting an opinion does not mean to reject the person.
