I was at my local bar and was trying to leave ... and somebody there wanted to buy me a drink, because I'm good entertainment value when I'm looped. But the bartender cut me off ...
And I was actually relieved, and I like the bartender personally, and realize he was doing me a solid.
And I said "Oh well. Maybe next time."
But I think the socially expected reaction was to belligerently insist that I wasn't drunk and how dare he deign to forbid me another drink.
Having aready belligerently insisted a minute before that my behavior had reached such an unacceptable level (I told a classic Groucho Marx joke, but botched the punchline) that I should be frog-marched from the building by police, or gendarme, or at least somebody in a recognisable uniform, I was temporarily wrong footed.
But I intend to go back when I'm sober and demand they serve me!
