Am I the only person who took NO TRIPS as a child?

This came up in conversation today and the person was very shocked that I hadn't anywhere as a kid and not many places in my own state.

Not all families could afford family vacations.

Then when I was an adult, working PT and going to school, I didn't have the money nor was able to take time off.

My first job out of college allowed very minimal time off and was super strict.

Then I had more money, plenty of time off, and no one to go anywhere with...

We took trips to see relatives, usually older relatives who sat around in the living room and chatted, not a regular vacation for scenery and fun. It wasn’t very often even then. We’d bring an ice chest, a jug of water and stop at a little store for lunchmeat, bread, bread spread, and some fruit and pull over at some picnic table rest stop next to the interstate to eat. No stops at restaurants. And no air conditioning most of the time. I would hear other kids talk about their summer vacations on Route 66 and the large national parks, camping & fun stop & camping fun etc. they had and just longed for that so much. We did go visit relatives in Waco and got to stop at Six Flags in Grapevine, TX for about half the day before skedaddling back to Oklahoma late that afternoon. I should be happy for that.

@Stereoguy wow that must have been really interesting.

We only traveled to visit relatives. I made it a point to make traveling a big part of my life and have visited many countries as an adult, for fun..
toddr13 · 46-50, M
We traveled, but it wasn't the "family vacation" sort of trips -- since my father never stopped working, and "vacation" to him meant working from 5am-10am only with a mobile business center. My mother did take us on some trips with one of my aunts, or we would go visit relatives in other countries/cities as children. Mostly, though, it was summer camp, then grandparents' summer house, amusement parks that were not too far away, etc. Sometimes, I was secretly jealous of families I knew who went on real family vacations where they did things together, drove in the family station wagon, or RV, etc.

My friend had a motor home and they would go on epic journeys out west for the entire summer, whereas I was marooned at camps in New England, the beach, etc. -- just similar scenery from year-to-year with other travel trips interspersed. When my brothers and I did go to Europe, sometimes for months on end, it was usually alone as we have family in several countries, so I could be in London, a brother in the South of France, etc. We did what we wanted, but it wasn't "together" all the time, as many people I know did do. They thought what we did was awesome, since they felt their families were suffocating, but they have stories about how their sister got on their nerves between Barstow and Vegas when they drove the wrong way around to get to the Grand Canyon, etc.

I grew up not leaving my state until I went into the service. We use to go visit relatives and have cookouts nearly every week in the summer . My grandmother lived close to a great sandy beach and not many people was there. As for vacations no we never went on any that I can remember. I remember like you when I did get so I had money and time then nobody was there to go with it seemed . I decided I didn’t care I’d go by myself it’s not the same but I did see a few beautiful places then my wife it was a lot better.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Repete having a grandmother living by a big sandy beach seems like a dream vacation to me. I’d be staying with grandma and helping her for the summer just to be able to go to the beach every few days.
Repete · 61-69, M
Yes I loved it and I did get to spend a week or two there each summer but my parents house was on the coast also but we had a very rocky beach my grandmothers house you could see a lighthouse actually we called it a spark plug because it didn’t have a house .@cherokeepatti

No, you aren't alone. It wasn't that I had no trips but it was very, very, very few.. I recall one visit to Oxford, UK, but that's it.. My parents were not rich, didn't have a car and then when I grew up, same as you, I was too busy and not enough money.. then in later years, I have just been too busy and worked places where I couldn't take time off..
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Adaydreambeliever At least you got to go somewhere and can make conversation about travel. I can't
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@iamnikki lol one city in the UK.. I live in the Uk :P
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Adaydreambeliever ah ok. I felt Very awkward earlier

I have to say travel was a big part of my early life. And my ship, which meant you saw (and even Smelled...It is amazing what smell can do with a memory) so much more. I watched half the world drift by and spent a day here and a day there in so many different places I remember. And met so many other children from different places.. It does change you...
CestManan · 46-50, F
Taking a trip is fun (or not) depending on where you go and with whom.

As a kid it was fun cause they are just along for the ride. Plus you didn't normally have to suffer mom's home made concoction meals.

As an adult, when your wallet is taking a beating and there are all the plans and hassles, it kind of takes away a lot of the fun.

I had similar experiences. My family traveled out of state by car once or twice a year but only to visit relatives, and we stayed at their houses and not in hotels. It was many years after college before I had time or money to travel, and then as you said, not many people to choose from to go with.

Never went on vacations, but don't feel that is so majorly important either.
I have never gone far from home or taken my children either. As adults, they can
go where they wish and they usually do. lol Still, nobody has shown a wish to travel the world or see touristy areas.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
Dad took the family to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, a friend's farm, twice. I went alone to Pennsylvania, D.C., Maryland,Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, and Alabama as an adult.
Sunflower2021 · 31-35, F
Nope. My mother was raising 4 kids on her own and she couldn't afford it. As a kid we did go to Marine world. When she had a function at work we went because it was free, water slides. I remember being so bored during the summers as a kid. I never even cared about going to disney land because I knew that would never happen. But as a mother I definitely want my kids to experience fun things as a family.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Sunflower2021 exactly. Never thought about Disney either. Knee it wasn't possible. Same, my kids will definitely experience life outside of 1 city, if I ever have any
Sunflower2021 · 31-35, F
@iamnikki I think it's important for kids to experience things outside of your home and even the park. It does get pricey but with time trips can happen.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Sunflower2021 yep. I only went a few cities over, but it was just to visit a relative. All we did there was go to Walmart.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
You don't HAVE to go with anyone. When I became an adult and travelled out of state, I went alone. Of course, my destinations were people I knew and worked with via phone conversations, but you don't need to do what I did.

Plan your own trip - - someplace you would like to go to - and start to ask cities and states for addresses and places to stay or find tourist help. All states have someplace to recommend to visitors. That is how they make money!
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@MaryJanine I understand that I can go anywhere alone. I always go places alone. I live alone. I am always alone. I do not want to take a solo vacation at this time I do want someone to go somewhere with
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@iamnikki Ask a friend.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
Nope.

In fact, I had not been to the nearby states or even within the state I lived because we didn't have a lot of money growing up. It wasn't until I got a motorcycle that I started venturing. I did venture too because I had exams and it would be in a different state. Taking a train ticket and getting an accomodation would be expensive so I'd take the bike, write the exam and return back.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Beatbox34 what exam are you referring to in another state?
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
@iamnikki It was for a job. The government purposely sent people to other states so that most wouldn't attend for the exams.
Tminus6453 · M
The furthest we went as kids was the beach which was 50 miles away...i never took an official trip until i was 20y/o
Platinum · M
I was lucky, we always went away , I was on holiday for the whole six weeks school holidays....
Wallflow3r · 26-30, F
I am so sorry to hear that. Not everyone is blessed with that luxury that's for sure. I was lucky and traveled a lot as a kid with my parents, we traveled all of Europe when I was Six. You should definitely save up money and travel!
Wiseacre · F
Then travel alone...it’s the best way...I have met many very interesting people. @iamnikki
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Wiseacre bad sense of direction, also, I'm always alone so at this point, I don't desire a solo vacation
Wiseacre · F
Then, find a travel companion!@iamnikki
SW-User
Of course not, every family is different. You'll travel if and when you want as an adult.
I can’t imagine living like that. You have got take a trip sometime you will love it.
School trips, yeah i kinda did. But after school, nahh. My parents are super strict, they never want me to go out with friends. Haha. It sucks because I'm kinda ignorant of what the world is outside our house
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Greyscale mine were the same. Litterally lost friends because they wouldn't let me go anywhere.
Ohhhh. ‘Trips’....
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
same.
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
My furthest trip as a kid was to Shea Stadium to see the Mets every summer. It was an hour away.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
Talk about where you WANT to go and why. That's always interesting.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@MaryJanine yea, just need someone to go with an I'll be all set. I don't want to go alone since my sense of direction is bad
TheBannibalOne · 61-69, M
Luckily I had my 2 uncles.
I went everywhere.
