Could you be friends with someone that has opposite views politically?

I’m doing a poll for class! And, to explain more. For instance, if you voted for Biden could you be friends with a trump supporter? And vice versa.

I’d want to hear their reasoning, because that says more about their character than anything they support.

@sspec Thanks. You know people have been telling me that since I was a kid. They always thought I’d end up doing great things. I’m a delivery driver. Not sure that’s what they had in mind. 😄
@Reject you sure have a mind that delivered substance on this thread. I am not typing coz of the tag of BC but because your expression holds momentum.
Blessings.

Friends ? No not at this time
TexChik · F
@Soossie it was very sad but when I realized my original opinion of her was only my construct and not reality it helped . But it was still very unpleasant to see the transformation
@TexChik

Hugssss... 🤗🤗❤

@Soossie Thank you sweetie ... I can always use a Sooossie hug! 🤗🤗😘

What does that even mean opposite? The ends don't justify the means - both political parties are supposed to want the same thing - personal liberty, free markets and a democracy - the ideals of the 2 parties are not "one size fits all" Can I not want gun control but oppose abortion? Can I be against capital punishment, and be pro-immigration?

By stoking the flames of dissent we are in danger of becoming tone deaf to our own values.

In a short answer - absolutely yes, we can be friends with others who don't share our views, especially when they share our moral values...
DCarey · 46-50, M
10 years ago, yes. Today, absolutely not. This country is in its worst crisis since the Civil War. In fact, I would argue that Civil War II has already begun.
It is quite difficult ... when our fundamental beliefs about the world are so different.

If I have friends over that favor killing babies, and at dinner grace I ask the Lord to protect the unborn ..... it immediately creates a highly uncomfortable situation.

Just like those that always want to attack Iran ... that is uncomfortable for me, cause that is not what America does.

It just becomes quite uncomfortable

So far so good... yes I can

@Soossie I think you are an expert!

Lolol... thank you... 🤗

I voted for Trump and have friends who either didn't vote and don't like either Trump or Biden and I have civil conversations with friends who did vote for Biden. Although, none of my friends who did vote for Biden even like him or call themselves Biden supporters. They only voted for him to vote against Trump. I am friends with people who agree with me politically and also people who are all over the political spectrum. And whenever we don't agree on something and wanna change the subject, we just talk about something else. Like anime or video games or manga or something else. We don't just discuss politics when we hang out. I even made an embarassing bet with a friend of mine who is on this site. We made an embarassing bet relating to the election.

I'm older, I've seen a lot of elections, and I've watched the division we have today grow and become militant and militarized over the years. I used to live in one of the reddest states, and it is beautiful, just amazing, but I'm Truly Blue, very left, I couldn't live in my home state now even if it was for huge amounts of cash, when I was young we just beat each other senseless over political differences, now I think it would possibly escalate way past fist fights. I don't even like to visit anymore. I've turned my back on some great old friends over the insanity of their political stances. I certainly couldn't date a Trump supporter let alone live with one.
SW-User
Yes because I care more about how they treat me as friend. The majority of my friends are liberals and some conservative. I don’t identify with any of those political views , yet I’m still friends with them.
SW-User
Depends on how opposite. I'm friends with people with whom I do not agree on many political issues, but certain extreme views would be likely sour the friendship. In the end, it's more about attitude than anything. If they are not constantly ranting about politics or trying to change my views, then I don't really care what they think. But I tend to be drawn to people who can think critically. Those who are locked into political dogma are not generally very interesting people. 🤷‍♂️
Yes because I hate politics so as long as they don’t talk about it around me they can like whatever they wish
a flat no.

The people on that side of aisle wear shirts like Six million jews were not enough, they tend to be white supremacist, etc.

We disagree way too strongly on everything that matters to me and I just could not do it.

Not to mention the religious nutters who want to take a womans right to choose from her, etc.

I might be male but ewww.. no thx.

I don't think most Republcians even see most Democrats and leftist as humans so Yeah, no.
yes, I can because I don't talk about that stuff seriously, to people that aren't family or like best friends
SW-User
Sure. As long as they keep their views to themselves which are likely going to create arguments between us.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Yes! I am friends with people for many reasons. Their political view is a small part of who and what they are.
abooklover · 56-60, F
Not close friends, acquaintances only. It's a moral issue for me.
Jlhzfromep · M
Yes I can as long as they are not a true radical on either side.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
I just care about people being happy and healthy.. in the end.. people vote based off fear.. they fear the other side will cause harm.. so they vote the way they think won’t cause harm.. 😷 as long as someone’s personality ain’t shit.. I’ll be friendly towards them.. and if they like me and I like them.. I ain’t one to judge.. my life is riddled with sin I could be judged for..
SW-User
I have had no problem being friends with either side or anything in between. People all have different views. I'm not fond of those who act in extreme ways when it comes to their beliefs. But everyone has their own reason for doing/believing/seeing things a certain way. Regardless of if it's correct in my mind or not.
Mindful · 56-60, F
Yes, and I am. But some people are able to share ideas, and get past party politics. Not everyone can. Some people think your eveil if you think differently. But I find that strange: Nobody thinks I’m evil if I don’t like pineapple pizza. Why am I evil just because I like something different.

Caramelwonder · 36-40, M
@AwesomeAutumn because I don’t want to have to justify my beliefs or my reasons for having them
midnightsun · 26-30, M
Yeah.

It's more of a fact that I don't discuss politics and doesn't like hanging around people who have nothing interesting going on in their lives except discussion about politics. whether they are with/against my political beliefs, it doesn't matter
firefall · 61-69, M
Not a friend. My housemate voted for Trump & I voted Biden, and we can get along easi;y * civilly, but we're not friends - I make it a point not to have any sort of serious discussion with her
curiosi · 61-69, F
They could be an acquaintance but I don't see a close relationship. Our political view are who we are at our core. It speaks of what we are.
One of my best friends is a hard core democrat. He hates Trump with a passion, but we get along great! We just laugh everything off.
I voted Biden & yes I can have meaningful positive interactions with people who are willing to do the same.
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
Yes, I'm blue and have red friends, I'm in UK though and don't take much notice of trump and his cronies
LeaDhelani · 22-25, F
As long as they don't push their views on me and are good to me, I am good!
Each to their own I say...
Yes, I have lots of friends whose political ideologies and policy views I don't agree with.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
Yes. See of my friends have opposing political views to my own views.
NoahB · 26-30, M
probably not lol. I can't get along with that mindset at all
I don't believe so
@Itsmrsockmonkey Could you explain why?
I've found there isn't any give only take with the liberal crowd@AwesomeAutumn
SW-User
Yes
I have relatives like that
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
Defines current state for me.
SirBenedictTheSecond · 22-25, M
I think I could.
stc615 · M
For the most part yes, each candidate had their own pros and cons...it’s conversations starters
FatherTime · 61-69, M
yeah I could. we should just never discuss politics though
No. I would have no respect for them whatsoever. For me it would be like befriending a white supremacist. Some things are a matter of right vs wrong. 🙁
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
Where is the Poll?
@KiwiBird It’s for class, I guess I should’ve made a poll on here😂
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@AwesomeAutumn It would be easier. Be interesting to know the nationality as well. In some countries the difference between the government and opposition isn't that great....in others it is very divisive.
And, why or why not?
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
I think its possible
DDonde · 31-35, M
I am, currently. We go a long ways back. I just don't talk politics with him.
Azlotto · M
Yes. I have several friends that have opposite views politically.

I have had friends of all kinds. As long as they arent actually physically harming people, they are entitled to believe whatever they want.
empanadas · 31-35, M
yeah, as long as they aren't extremist
GERRI · 51-55, F
@empanadas Do you mean like being a member of ANTIFA?
empanadas · 31-35, M
@GERRI both sides got extremist. i don't want to be close to either

@RogueLoner yes a friend I had known here for years surprised me. I caught her making a disgusting hate filled rant at conservatives because of the faux election results . I called her out on her hateful
Vitriol and she told me to take it or leave it . I said I would be leaving it . She blocked me . She became the disgusting example ( or hid it from me) of a liberal that I can not stand . 🤷🏻‍♀️
