I am not familiar with external heteropagus twins, but I assume abortion of one twin could be an option to prevent the loss of both twins. I am familiar with two cases of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in which the option of last resort is the aborting of the twin less likely to survive full-term. That allows the stronger twin to survive.
