Social distancing in your home swimming pool?

On the Today Show they're giving tips for Memorial Day celebrations as a relates to the pandemic. They recommend staying 6 ft apart in your swimming pool. Does that even make sense? It's your home pool, you're outside, and there's chlorine in the pool. Does social distancing even seem possible in this case?

Yeah, ofc. The fact that it's your home doesn't make a difference unless you're alone for Memorial Day (in which case, staying six feet away is pretty much inevitable). The virus doesn't gaf about property lines. The fact that you're outside doesn't help too much -- though it does a little -- because the virus can and will spread through the air regardless of whether it's fresh or conditioned. There's chlorine in the pool, but the water isn't and never was the concern. Unless you keep your head underwater the whole time, you're still inhaling and exhaling the open air, which is basically the same situation as when you're on land.

You'd have to have a pretty big swimming pool to maintain the distance of 6 ft apart or 2 metres.

An Olympic swimming pool is 50 metres/164 ft in length by 25 metres/82 ft wide. So given that you'd have to maintain a 2 metre radius/6 ft all around you, no more 55 people would be allowed in that pool for safe measure.

The average backyard pool is less than a quarter of that size. So I'm thinking two people maximum providing the pool was properly serviced and the water is chlorinated.

It's hard to social distance in a party, you are taking a chance if you can't manage it. Unless all the people there are already living with you. You're breathing each other's breath, and exertion makes your breath more forceful.
