Never understood why is kindness looked down upon. My life has only been enriched by people who genuinely went out of their way to help.
I suppose what people don't like is kindness with hidden motives. So they automatically dislike all that reminds them of it, including authentic kindness.
Sometimes I shield myself from kindness too.. being overly kind makes you a target for those who know how to pull that string.
My bet is trust your instinct. Be kind but not ashamed to respect yourself :)
