Why dont we show compassion to drug addicts

I think we should stop punishing drug addicts. We should show them compassion. Drug addiction is a medical problem not morality problem.

Thanks for the great comments, I agree with your point of view entirely, having worked with people with drug addiction issues; I’ve seen the other side of the coin.

I used to agree with the people who just say it’s a choice till I had family members suffer from it. Then I started learning about it. The war on drugs is completely insane. It’s based on lies. Putting addicts in jail doesn’t make them stop yet we keep doing it because of our ignorance. Nothing good has come from our war on drugs. @BalmyNites

@Bandit2398 ‘War on drugs’ is just a play on words, used by the media to incite hostility & lack of empathy towards individuals who are addicted to drugs. These sort of terms completely dehumanise people & make it easier to manipulate opinion. You notice how it’s used in situations like ‘War on terror’ etc, total rubbish. I’m sorry to hear you’ve experienced this issue close-hand, but admire anyone who takes the time to step outside the box & think for themselves. As an ex police officer, I fully agree that prison/incarceration does not rehabilitate people, it simply criminalises them further.

Well said@BalmyNites

It's a self-inflicted problem though, like alcoholism.

@energie Oh, I suffer from depression and have done since my early teens, so I am certainly no stranger to it.

Shitty, horrible things happen in life, and you either choose to overcome them, or you don't.

You can't blame the universe and just give up and crawl into a bottle or a syringe and then expect the world to owe you compassion.

You have to work through it, and the strength for that can only come from within.

@Quizzical Depression affects different people in different ways. Im sorry for what you've gone through but you cant make comparisons like that. If you knew you could take drugs to get temporary relief from your suffering then I am not so sure you would turn them down. Plus some people are genetically predisposed to addiction. You may just be lucky enough to not be one of them

You ever tried to help a drug addict? It's the most exhausting thing in the world, they will lie, cheat, kill you if you come between them and drugs. I'm all for people who want to change, but they have to WANT to change.

A medical problem? Haha, I don't buy that for a sec. It is an addiction. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try an help them tho

I agree. But little to no compassion for illegal drug smuggler, distributers, makers or sellers.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
You know if we were to legalize drugs it would put all of those guys out of business. @Heartlander

Some people do, not everyone judges
We should do a lot of things

Yes, but possession and distribution makes them perpetrators as well. The solution is 2-pronged
strongbow · 46-50, M
Cause they choose to take drugs
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
@GallantlyChurlish Because everyone is different. different people deal with trauma in different ways. Some people just try to tough it out and not talk about it which is the worst thing you can do.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
@GallantlyChurlish Also drug addiction isn't the only type of addiction. Some people become addicted to gambling or food.
There is also a genetic predisposition to addiction. People without these particular genes wont become addicts from trauma. Its a very good question though.
Putting people in jail just adds to their trauma. that's why punishment doesn't work and just make them worst addicts.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
@GallantlyChurlish I want to turn your question around on you. If drugs cause drug addiction then why doesn’t everyone who take drugs become an addict? Why don’t we see everyone who gets drugs in the hospitals become addicts?
