Do you know the difference between the "best" and the "greatest"?

Like the difference between conceptual virtuosity and technical virtuosity maybe?

Michael Jordan might be the greatest basketball player of all time but people tell me Larry Byrd was the best. I don't really know though.

But I do know Jimi Hendrix is the greatest guitarist. I couldn't pick the best, though. Maybe Steve Vai? Or Satriani?

Eminem is the best AND the greatest though. Slim Shady was anyway...

God I'm so bored at work and I'm a skilled laboror how does this even happen??

Jordan and Bird were both awesome. Jordan was probably the best scorer from anywhere on the floor. Bird was a hell of a passer and shooter as well. Lebron is a great all around player like Magic Johnson.

As for guitar..... Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best, rest in peace.

Best is often a 'mark of the time'.
That person was the best......at that time.

Greatest is often when that person is compared to other 'bests' of their time.

They say Ali is the greatest

But technically he is not the best
