Should tips be mandatory?

I went to restaurant with husband and saw family that not tip. The server look disappointed.

If it's mandatory then it's not a tip, it's a fee..
Decent wages should be mandatory...not begging

Tips are kind of earned. I tip generously, but if they were a problem for me, they're lucky to get a dollar.

Servers should be paid at least minimum wage..
Tips are optional, not automatically deserved.
No, tips should not be mandatory. Tips are the only control the customer has over the service they receive. Many waiters and waitresses, like the rest of us, do the best job they can. Many don’t. Those who do, I usually over tip. Those who don’t I may not tip at all. The REALLY bad ones get a penny, my way of showing I didn’t forget to tip - I just don’t think they deserve one.

In many poorer countries where a service job doesn't offer a real living wage , a tip is a way of feeding the family, Some Asian countries and African countries also extend this to fictional service fees or "bribes" so that low paid government workers can put food on the table and educate their kids. Personally I find it odd the this system can extend to places like America.
Of course, an individual going above and beyond with service should be appreciated with a tip.

There is hardly any tipping done in Australia. Industrial law insists that all workers are paid a decent wage. When we travel to the USA, it is very confusing to work out tipping etiquette. Sometimes we (shock, horror), just forget... Sorry guys... :/

@JoyfulSilence Here they would be paid something like a minimum of US$8.00 , more with age...

@walabby

It is actually less than $3.

@JoyfulSilence That's pretty lousy.. I do try to remember to tip when in the US...

Tips don’t always go to the waiters , I knew a girl who was a waiter and she never got the tips they all went to the mangers. So no and not everyone has spare change available at the time. Also you pay enough for the places service

I don't think they should be mandatory, I just think servers should get paid more so they don't have to worry about them.
firefall · 61-69, M
In the US, yes, that's a wretched thing to do - US law in most state reduces waitstaff wages on the anticipation of them making tips. If I get poor service, I'd tip fairly minimally (15%ish), but otherwise quite a bit more. A waiter/waitress would have to go well out of their way to personally outrage me, to make me omit a tip altogether.

Tipping is rare in Australia, but wait staff's wages are better...
RaemaSnr · 22-25, F
In my country tips are considered funny/weird/wasting money
SpaceCreature · 26-30, F
Perhaps the server wasnt up to their standards.
SW-User
No , as not everyone has any spare change
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
In the US servers are paid well below the minimum wage because it is expected that the difference will be made up in tips. I think if it is not, the employer has to make it up themselves.
firefall · 61-69, M
@JoyfulSilence in theory the employer has to, in practice it literally never happens
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@firefall The bastards!
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
People should tip because wages for servers are puposely set lower than other workers, because the tips are supposed to make up the difference.
maybe they are poor . but i don't think it should a thing that we do regularly. i think servers should make more money
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
No, you should tip if you want to and of the service you get from waiter or waitress
Goralski · 51-55, M
Then it wouldn't b an tip😶
SW-User
Yes they should
solitaire · 41-45, F
Yes it is good to tip
SW-User
Yup that's shitty
That kind of negates the premise around gratuities. At some businesses it is, really—calculated into the cost of the meal. Arguably there might be less incentive to provide the best service.

[@ In some restruants the tips are put into a pot and then devided amung the servers whether they gave good service or not. I believe good service deserves a good tip. I've wandered around a restruant to find the server to make sure they get the tip.
@jackson55 Same here. For really good service I put the tip in the wait staff’s hand.

[@ Yes, I do the same.
