She was born in Germany and then her family moved to Canada. She came to the States on a visa and has been working for over 10 years. She now has to leave next week to Germany where she has no family.
This happened to a similar friend of mine. She left France at the age of 5 and moved to the USA, she went to uni there are after 20 years they still didn't grant her citizenship. Her parents got it and stayed, her brother moved to Canada, and she to Japan. It's unfortunate.
@ConanTheLibrarian For you to go through this entire thread, and comment like you're the man, you absolutely, positively, must have no life to speak of.
@AMERICA1ST I am an American citizen and have dual-citizenship. I have friends after 20 years still not getting citizenship after applying. These people pay taxes, have great jobs in universities or their own businesses, and contribute to our economy. Please remember there are plenty of people living and working in the USA LEGALLY on VISAS. You don't need to be a citizen, but they are helping our economy so they are vital to society.
Lot of this going on at the moment. I think governments are looking at what they are having to pay out for and want to cut it to bare minimum. Shows you how bad economies are or are likely to become !
That's a shame. There must be extensions she could apply for or perhaps some path to resident alien status. But she's probably exhausted all those possibilities.
And no lawyer will help her? Has she applied locally to political people? Has she taken her story to the media? Try that. People banning together can make a difference at times.
@FelixLegion honestly, i don't know how the process works. i have, however, seen the process take anywhere from 5 years to over 20 years. My friend's brother was very emotional to finally receive his citizenship after 20 years, even after he attended high school and college here in the states. so i feel like it's not a very simple process.
