Why do people ask about marriage at job interviews? :/

ABCDEF7 · M
It gives an idea about your responsible attitude and tendency to switch job. Married people are less likely to switch job for small issues, because they are usually expected to be having more responsible behaviour due to family.
ABCDEF7 · M
@ABCDEF7 One more thing, Singles can be more comfortable in odd shifts of work.
StoicGrappler · 26-30, M
It's illegal to ask about marital status in an interview
StoicGrappler · 26-30, M
@MissMollyCharlotte0702 It might not necessarily be illegal to ask but it can be used as grounds for a discrimination case, each state has something in place for this. For example, Florida has the Civil Rights Bill of 1992.
Yes I agree.@StoicGrappler
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@StoicGrappler Just because it's illegal, doesn't mean everyone obeys it-as I'd like to point out. Almost every job interview I've ever had, I was asked if I was married or had plans to be pregnant in the near future, because they'd gotten frustrated with hiring women who work a year or two and then leave. Or if I had kids, because typically people with kids need to be able to take more sick leave. Its a little bit annoying, but I do understand why they are asking.
Noble · 56-60, M
They shouldn’t. That is evidence of discrimination.
I believe, if hired, they would like to see you make a commitment to your work and your job. If one is married, no matter the sex of that person, they have already shown that they know how to commit- in that case to another person and perhaps a family- as a Mother or a Father. That may make the candidate for the position more desirable. A commitment to marriage, by him or her, shows they are grown up and ready to accept the responsibilities that come with it. It has very little to do with her getting prego and missing a lot of work , legally, due to pregnancy.

@Elandra77 alot of people asked me this question lately so I was little pissed that day. 😅
@SW-User That never bother me. What does bother me is when they want to know what my social media accounts are. And when I say I never had FB and never will they seem angry. But what my account are and where they are at is my business.
SW-User
@Elandra77 I am lucky that I wasn't asked for social media accounts. 😅
wakanda4eva · 26-30, F
pregnancy, babies are a liability
SW-User
@wakanda4eva guys don't get pregnant,you are a little baby.
wakanda4eva · 26-30, F

I was working for a rather larger Company. *American Express* & mailing out their monthly bills. Thanks ALL above I never had to service the incoming phone calls. Those were handled in another building.
Now back to your question. You have reviews, You have updates on your performance. Most companies have to schedule Vacation days. If you're sick... I suppose falls into another category. Sometimes rules change to accompany a situation. You cannot switch a vacation day with a sick day.
Again... it depends on the Company rules you applied for.
SW-User
@Carla1951 it had nothing to do with company's rule. He asked me because mostly in our community people get married at early age like in early 20's
1. To understand candidate better.
2. To gauge candidate's level of commitment, responsible behavior and maturity to handle awkward situations.

The reason for not doing so was also asked in the same context to know you more. Generally, its irrelevant but since it happened this time, next time onwards - be firm in approach and show your calmness by replying at ease to let them hire a confident fellow.

Bests!
SW-User
@sspec Thanks. But the question had nothing to do with my work. He said, 'People from our community get married early like at age of 22, so why didn't I get married yet.'

Also I want to thank you for other post/comments but I can't reply you untill you write me back.
@SW-User 👍

2. To gauge candidate's level of commitment, responsible behavior and [c=#000000]maturity to handle awkward situations.[/c]
SW-User
@sspec I just gave him a smile and said, Some people get married and some don't'. Or maybe he wanted to check my character.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
They want to know a little about you probably to see if you'll be a good fit and it might to them seem like a casual question to get a peek at your personality. Also sometimes people have different expectations and experiences with their employees when their single vs married...and it effects who they hire. And gives them a stereotypical idea of how things might go. It's a bit discriminatory....but there it is.

also, stop calling yourself a poop. 😤
SW-User
@Scribbles I won't call my self a poop. 😁

Honestly I agree with your answer because I never minded that questions in past interviews. But this was just a sucker punch to me. I was asked plenty of reasons for why I wasn't married yet. In our community people generally get married at younger age. Much younger then me. The ones who are late or have not yet married are judged very much. They think either I not from a good cultural background. Or they think I had bad experiences in past or I am gay or I have a bad disease. I was told that at the interview. Later I sucked at interview because of all all this. :(
SW-User
I've never been to an interview where they asked me such a personal question.
But I suspect it would be to get a feel for you. Your life in general.
SW-User
@SW-User it was quite shameful because I failed at something which I thought I knew. I am actually quite dumb now.
SW-User
@SW-User Don't be so harsh on yourself.
SW-User
@SW-User I am very lost.
summersun · 36-40, F
Probably because it could affect your performance. some jobs would require one to travel a lot then marriage and the marital status of a person could be a factor. There are several reasons why they ask about it but mostly the reason would depend on the question(s) they asked
SW-User
@summersun it wasn't about traveling or work related. He said 'people from my community get married at 22'
summersun · 36-40, F
@SW-User as I've said, the way you respond could be a determining factor for them. I just cited an example. In the situation that you provided, your response could give them a better understanding about who you are, like if you answer them because I am not yet prepared to settle down and I don't want to raise a family unprepared. Your answer alone could give them an idea about the kind of person you are and how you handle things.
SW-User
@summersun I replied. ' some people are married and some don't at this age'
SW-User
If it’s in the US that’s unprofessional and illegal.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
It's certainly unprofessional.
There may be some link to the fact 'married' folk are less likely to call in sick or need extended periods away from work for personal reasons.
But it sure is an odd question.
SW-User
@Picklebobble2 I have been very regular and living in the same city and work here for a lot of time.
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
@Picklebobble2 I agree. They want to discover if you home life might interfere with your work load.
SW-User
@Carla1951 No it didn't I realised that he had lots of hot chicks in his company and wanted to check that I can be secure or not. I hate that thing. I am nice and I am tired of proving it and marriage thing is just not enough to judge a person. That question panicked me alot and I ended up being screwed at final round.

Honestly I am lost and getting panicked attacks at this age. I just don't know what to do with life :'(
celine211 · 22-25, F
To women!! They don't ask men..because if they're married they might plan to have kids..and what would that mean maternity leave
celine211 · 22-25, F
@SW-User well lets face it your one of the few men to be asked tho.. maybe so that there wou't be complaints that its only the women they ask
SW-User
@celine211 asking the reason for not being sounds disturbing. He said all young lads at my or younger to me are married.
celine211 · 22-25, F
@SW-User he asked why you're not married? ... i'd be pissed its personal i would politely ask what it has to do with being able to do the job at hand insetd of answering
chrisCA · M
They may feel that a married person may be more committed to a job, than say a single person still living with their parents.
SW-User
@chrisCA or they think I am gay?
chrisCA · M
@SW-User I don't know. Maybe.
Here, an interviewer is not allowed to ask questions that would give the impression they are discriminating on items covered under the Human Rights Code. Of course, I am sure a skilled person can obtain information from the most innocent question. Much like the police.
SW-User
@chrisCA I am just a poop
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
Your personal home life should not reflect your work ethics. However when there is conflict at home you may not perform your best.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Carla1951 did you know some employers check their employees Facebook accounts ?
I know of three people who have lost their jobs because they worked together and started criticizing the management on facebook !
SW-User
@Picklebobble2 This way I will be totally shit. Honestly I don't use FB but any employer wants a candidate on stupid guidelines then they should only hire robots.
ethereal · F
Ohh that’s why you said marriage in that other question! 😆😅😂
I guess the interviewers might wanna know whether you’re happy or married 🤣
SW-User
@ethereal 😂
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
And I feel this is not right. Unless the person doing the interview wants to know your personal family life.
SW-User
@Carla1951 asking about family Member or background is fine. But asking the reason for not being married is shameful
SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User yes they ask 'why didn't you get married yet' straight on the face.
SW-User
@SW-User :/ that's weird.
SW-User
@SW-User :(
SW-User
They wanna know who their hiring??

@SW-User yes I feel like a poop :(
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
I believe most job interviews want to know your home life, so they might be able to know if you will be a loyal consistent employee.
SW-User
You should have said that’s you want to be single and travel
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
That's strange. Perhaps to get to know you? Are you a family guy?
SW-User
@MartinTheFirst it's very strange.
