My kids love their step-mom...and she is rather more strict that I am... but she cares for them sooo well... that they just love her!

That was also my definition of being a father. I was strict with my son, too, but only because I loved him and really cared for him.

I wish more parents would be like you. Loving, caring, guiding, with a cane ready for when punishment is needed.

To me what you described above is just what a loving parent does. A strict parent is one that doesn't allow rules to be bent in the slightest. An overly strict parent is one that makes rules that serves no purpose that to cause the child to fail at keeping them.

My kids and their friends said this often when they were growing up ... now they all so thankful we were ....

I totally agree with you. There is lots of nonsense these days about letting children find their own boundaries but life is not like that. It's poor parenting not to have rules and consequences for them

Agreed. I might also add that you don't allow excuses to get in the way of what should be done.

I think it means setting clear and firm boundaries to keep them safe and behaving well and disciplining them for breaking those boundaries.

Well yes but teaching them right from wrong and the wrong actions have consequences and they must be responsible for there actions
