Your employer has to deal with the lack of productivity if they haven't provided you with the right tools.

In the age of technology why you have to install everything from scratch? There are container packages that comes with everything bundled together. With some knowledge of how the docker works, everything can be installed on your system through the push of a button.

Some examples of bad tools are,

1. A very slow laptop: Make sure your RAM is at least 8GB (16 GB if you are doing CPU intensive work).
2. Internet: You need to have fast upload and download speed. Especially in the age where everything is data driven, lack of speed is just unacceptable.
3. Right tools: Sometimes the network security of your organization doesn't let you download something that could help you out to do your task faster. Tell your employer and justify why you need it. If they don't approve, they have to suck it up and deal with the delay. Save the copies of the email communication.
4. Automate as much as possible: This may sound silly, but every office work can be automated. You don't have to do a manual eyeballing of everything, it injects errors. You'll have a lot free time to work on your skills and learn new stuff if you automate repetitive boring tasks.
5. Meetings: It's not a tool, but useless meetings are very unproductive. There are certain organizations where they run meetings all day long and expect you to be productive. Unless your job is running meetings, meetings are just time wasters.

Most employers just put the ball in your court for not meeting the deadlines while they are the ones who are running the business on cheap stone-age infrastructure. They hand you over an axe and tell you to compete with someone who has a chainsaw. Don't fall for those unrealistic goals.

Peace out.

Ticking quite a few of those boxes but they are on our radar for improvement

@Ironicman You have acknowledged them. Good for you.

@SW-User yes, the problem for small business is the rate of change to digital commerce has evolved, several times. More recently, cloud and mobile shifts. Plus recent UK changes to data governance. Luckily we switched to cloud environment before the pandemic. The pandemic has focussed what areas we need to do to support staff. My view has always been that (1) if we don't have the right tools we will lose good staff and our competitive edge
(2) develope and max the tools you've invested in.

@Ironicman Glad you moved to cloud. Very less headache compared to managing on premise infrastructure. Agreed on losing the good staff part. It's not easy to hire new ones and train them to do what the ones who left were doing.
It's not just in IT.

This happens everywhere.
I'm a pro cleaner and groundsman ...and the last century equipment, and even expired chemicals and busted ass tools I've been expected.to do my job with, is ridiculous.

And I see people in my profession who aren't trained, not even aware of safety protocols, self safety, risk awareness and responsibility .

It blows my mind how these people still have their jobs

But management doesn't care .

So when I see a lazy assed relief cleaner , wiping down their desks with a toilet mop ....I just smile quietly to myself and thank karma 😂
@SW-User yep..
That sounds right ...something not diluted...and it becomes an irritant.

Worst case I heard of was a cleaner who thought she might just save time ...and mix all her cleaning chemicals into one .

It took over 12 months for employees to work out that they were all suffering from a similar rash .
And what was worse...was that the female employees had been suffering blisters on the backs.of their thighs for all that time....but never said anything to anyone...as it was so personal.

They finally tracked it down ...and found this cleaner had basically mixed up a skin dissolving acid into one bottle .

And she never got fired .

Put it this way .

After seeing what some do in this industry...I don't touch A THING!...when I go out in public if I can help it.

Not saying there aren't good ones ...some people with OCD make brilliant cleaners.

Bit I've seen groundsmen mow over metal cans...that become chewed up pieces of skin slicing shrapnel....in parks and play areas !!!

They don't care , because management doesn't care...because they are all ticking off numbers, rather than working together. 🤷‍♀️

@OogieBoogie
because they are all ticking off numbers, rather than working together
Couldn't have said it better. I really feel bad for those employees with blisters. :(
@SW-User I'd say government departments are the worst ....its not their money they're spending, so they don't care.

But yeah....it is everywhere.

Itd the 21 century...but in some places...you wouldn't know it 😂
