People who work from home: how does the job know you're actually working?

Do you use instant messaging? That typically has a status.

If you have to VPN to get into work. They can probably tell how much input/output you have.

It's different for me because I can do a lot of work through virtual machines (I have a three hour process going right now) and it won't show any activity on the VPN.

No. They have always kept track of our orders and stuff. Luckily, with or without this virus being out this is still a work from home job. At anytime, I am able to turn my profile off so that I don't receive any orders because I am an indepent contractor. They know if we're not working. The managers have access to our profiles and stuff.

They will know if you are actually working or not from the output.

If they get a call saying "I didn't get my *whatever* as expected this week" all they have to do is look at who was supposed to deal with it and ask them why it wasn't done as expected... and they will do that.

They don't know, in my case. I mean, they see my online status on Skype but that's it. They just trust that you're doing what you're paid for and if you weren't it would soon become clear anyway.

Most are given a quota or list to accomplish. If they spend 20 minutes or 20 hours on it doesn't matter, as long as it gets done.
