HR material?

I work at a casino and this lady who is a pit boss was off her break and a coworker asked her if she’s going back in and she replied with yeah, I gotta get back to Chinatown. The majority or table game players are asian and I found that a little offensive. I had asked around and most employees say she’s just like that. Where she’ll make a comment and not realize how insensitive it is. I told my supervisor about it and she wants me to make a statement. I don’t want to be dramatic about it but it was a little racist. Being a person of color I’m subjected to this kind of behavior but never thought it would happen at work. I don’t know if she was trying to be funny because she did get a couple of laughs but I did not find it funny.

A similar situation happened to someone I knew. If other employees are dismissing her behavior by saying she’s “just like that,” then it’s very likely she’s in a comfortable position in the workplace in which no one tells her anything. It’s possible that she has gotten complaints in the past but nothing was done to correct her. Judging by the reply from other employees, if you go to HR and the problem blows up, they aren’t going to have your back.
You can simply tell her that you found her comments offensive. If you hear her making a comment like that again, you can say something like “I don’t think that was appropriate to say” or “that’s rather disrespectful.” Sometimes a simple verbal disapproval is all it takes.

It's not funny, but can't you just tell her privately without turning it into a whole drama? Maybe she doesn't realize how insensitive she is being. Awareness can be very educational.

People use the "she's (or he) just like that" excuse for all kinds of things that shouldn't be excused.
Even if she didn't mean to offend, it's still ignorant and "tone deaf", especially now that we're all supposed to be enlightened and "woke".
