Anyone ever worked at a school/university?

How was it? Good work/life balance?

I need a new job. One where I don't get penalized for taking time off.
One where I can actually use the PTO I have earned.

I've worked at a university for nearly 30 years. We have great benefits, including a significant amount of time off. The university recognizes that it can't reward us with great salaries or more than token raises every year, so we are encouraged to use our time off.

@DunningKruger That’s a great way of appreciating the workers to encourage you to take your time that you’ve earned.
I presently work for an elementary school - Office Admin. I enjoy my time here the kids are great...and i love knowing that i have 2 months off in the summer :)
@iamnikki let's not forget 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week for spring break...

@submissivelittlewoman lovely. I assumed you'd have to work that for preparing for the return of students.
@iamnikki If the kids are not in school...we don't have to be here.

It was good the first half of the time and the last 7 years or so all of that crashed. We had a new president and although he promised not to contract out departments he was doing exactly that, so it was held over our heads and we had our workload nearly doubled. The stress was making people sick and injuries increased too. I guess if you find the right place to work it would be good.

@waleskinder Worse than that even. What is sad was that the football coach was the highest paid public official in the state. The athletic coaches made more than the professors.

@waleskinder The tide has turned. It was worse than you think. This man had (used to) power in the world. Things have changed and I’m happy about that. Don’t see his big cronies coming to his defense.

Teaching is just like any other job. Just because your kid's are off. Doesn't mean you can just take a vacation. Your meeting parent's. Grading test and work. Having meetings for the next part of school. Like around here most teachers have a second job. I knew a few that did sport's. Drive buses.

@smileylovesgaming There are other things to do besides teaching. Thanks though

@iamnikki not what I'm saying. That is how low teaching pay was here. My aunt teaches also drive's a bus for extra money. She was talking about how strict the school was with grades. If your class did not do a certain % in grades u got fired.

I teach at a school. The work/life balance is good, but it’s like any other job, I suppose. It is what you make it.

My old university had a program where students could work for school credits and minimum wage. Was the best sort of work/life balance I could ask for, at that stage of my life.
