Retail is dead end

Anyone else working in retail feel like there going nowhere?
I mean I work with people who have working the same sales assistant job for 13 years...how??????

They are because they are got too comfortable doing what they did or do. They never thought of doing something different. When some cash flew in, that's it, but to be honest, you can't live your whole life doing those A to B jobs. Either you skill up and do things that are in demand, or get completely wiped out. Sounds harsh, but that's what it is. The only way to survive in today's world is never getting too comfortable and keep changing and learning.

I will be honest with you. I'm a hiring manager for an engineering company that sometimes hires non engineers and I like seeing retail on a person's resume. You become battle hardened. It's not a career but you learn some valuable skills.

I don't think it is but when sales clerks are given symbolic job titles such as sales assistants it usually is. It only sounds good on a resume. The sales jobs with a strong chance for advancement take knowing your products, your target customers, believing you have the best value and products to sell, a vocabulary of words that sell and good communication skills. All that and a job that pays any kind of commission can be very lucrative if you "play your cards" right.

I think the only way retail isn't a dead end is if you own the store or are an international buyer for a big store or are the designer of a retail product that is currently riding a big wave of popularity.

I felt that way when I used to work in retail for a bit over 2 years. Plus I hated being treated like shit all the time by people who don't even know me just for doing my job. So I got a better job and left.

Yeah retails pretty bad. What’s worse are the people who view it as a living. I mean... it may be for them but they’re looking at the whole 9 yards. Like becoming a general manager.

They never learned something different. I don’t know how people stay in retail for so long without snapping.
