Do you think immigrants are only interested in welfare?

That's the line from the right, but is it true? The only immigrants I know (I don't know whether they're illegal or not) are very hard-working. So going by anecdotal evidence, I would say "no".

My one qualm would be they all seem to have large families and their families keep getting larger. Seems like if your financial resources are limited, you might put less of an emphasis on a large family, but I'm just saying. That happens with "native born" Americans as well.
In my experience, most immigrants are hard-working, decent folks - just like Americans in that regard.

In our country, when farming was a common way to make a living, big families were common too. Home-grown farmhands.

I am heartily in favor of immigration. It's new blood, new ideas, new strengths.

I am equally heartily opposed to illegal immigration as much as because of what happens to illegal inmigrants both on their way here and after they arrive as dangers they represent to American citizens.

The country's law opposes unrestricted immigration and if that is not what the American people want anymore, then the laws should be changed, not ignored and subverted. The ambiguity of immigration law enforcement is not only unfair, it's dangerous.

@Mamapolo2016 How long ago did you work in welfare? I know someone who’s son was saying it was about 40% of the ones getting food stamps were illegals and that was 2011-2012. He works for the Oklahoma dept. of human services.
I left in May 2009.

I'm usually pretty cautious about what somebody's son said, but then, you don't know me any better than that. @cherokeepatti
At this site you can find the "Who's eligible for food stamp guidelines". Illegal immigrants are not eligible. In order to qualify, they'd have to present false documents, and how would the caseworker KNOW if they're legal or illegal?

I lived in university housing about 25 years ago and there was an African couple who had one baby after another using our medical facilities and getting food stamps and housing aid. They had 6 children and the oldest was in first grade. The woman said she wasn’t having any more but she did, her husband said they’d have as many as God allowed (because he wasn’t supporting them)...the woman ended up going to work at a nursing home, got kicked in the stomach by a patient with Altzeimhers, she was pregnant for a 7th time and her husband said he was suing the nursing home. Seems like one big scam family and I don’t know if the children ended up the same. The man was playing his education visa to the hilt. I think certain groups are more likely to scam for benefits than others, although someone from this couple’s country told me he talked to the man about spacing his family out but the man didn’t care.

I am in Canada : older immigrants worked hard . Nowadays it is a free for all for free stuff , both for many legal and illegals ( yep they are not turned away ).

@revenant An older El Salvadoran man with a business here said that he worked his butt off when he came here some 30 years ago, nobody gave him anything and he didn’t expect it and he helped younger family members come here and now regrets it. He said they feel entitled and want everything they can get for free and that they need to go back. I told him that I agreed, if they don’t want to work we don’t want or need them here. The system will collapse soon at this rate. And I do respect those who have worked hard to build a life and are willing to pay their dues. It’s not easy living in a different culture, speaking a different language and learning all the laws and such.

@cherokeepatti same story here. The immigrants who really really worked hard are the most pissed off at what they see is happening. Well when the bread basket will be empty..who will fill it again ?🙄

@revenant things need to change to build the system back up again

I'm an immigrant. I came here by myself, and I've never collected any form of government assistance.

I think most immigrants are just looking for a better quality of life for themselves and their family.

Not just welfare, buy their house with our Taxes. Drug smuggling and many more

In highschool I was a cashier at a grocery store. Huge ass arab families would come in with like $500+ in foodstamps

I am a social worker and I am working since 6 years with refugees.

I would say there are BOTH groups:

Some refugees are coming really just to collect welfare, but a BIG PART of my clients are coming here because of really, really problems. Especially those people try hard to integrate theirselves in my country as fast as possible and many of them get a work so that they don´t need welfare anymore (at least not much).

From the other immigrants I know many who open their own business. They also don´t live from welfare. Of course, some immigrants might be just interested in welfare, but I think this is only a small part... :-?
Hoosierxdaddy62 · 61-69, M
Except immigrants don't get welfare until they become citizens.

This is a red herring argument

@Hoosierxdaddy62 Part of why I doubt the argument that immigrants are only coming here for "free stuff".
Pherick · 41-45, M
@Hoosierxdaddy62 The only "free stuff" they get is kid-related free stuff. Access to public schools, access to school meal assistance, maybe some child healthcare, like CHIP here in PA?

Thats pretty much it though, they are not getting free housing and welfare checks as some would have you believe.
I don't know any immigrants that don't work hard.
PrivatePeeks · 26-30, F
It makes sense that immigrants are more daring and hard working. They aren't looking for a free ride, but a chance to prosper through their efforts.
SW-User
Oh no. Not this new wave of them. Oh they are interested in that but have a much more important mission than that.
SW-User
@SW-User And what might that be? :)
