How much are you willing to work?

One of my employees has voiced an interest in another position, actually a management position that opened up. I told him it might be a good fit for him. This despite giving him a 50% rating last year. Actually, part of me would rather see him move on so I don't have to deal with him anymore.

I know the person in the position currently (she's leaving end of month) and she probably averages 10-12 hour days. She's a good manager. In reviewing the position with him, I asked him how hard he's willing to work.

His reply: 80%.

Explains a lot.

He doesn't want to work and should be in entry level positions.. that person has No ambition whatsoever and probably watches the clock all day until he can leave... He'd be a useless manager

@TamAngel I guess I'm not used to your company's percentage rating system. To me, "50%" sounds abysmally bad, like a failing grade, but maybe it just means low-average to your company?
TamAngel · F
@SW-User I wouldn't hire him.
TamAngel · F
@JohnYahYah It's below average and corresponds to the % of pay with bonus, but I didn't give him a pay increase, he didn't deserve it.

Does your company have a history of promoting /overpaying underachieving men who are part of the boy's club?
JohnYahYah · 61-69, M
@TamAngel Easier said than done, I know, but perhaps you should look for a place that doesn't expect hard working women to clean up the messes of non-achieving men?
Just the fact that the company retained this idiot and expects you to have to interact with him says something about how much they value you.
TamAngel · F
@JohnYahYah Corp thinks I'm awesome.
JohnYahYah · 61-69, M
@TamAngel that's encouraging. Perhaps they aren't all bad, then.
StevetheSleeve · 31-35, M
Lol. The guy's honest to a fault. But "pass the trash" is always tempting.
TamAngel · F
@StevetheSleeve People have mentioned that the biggest issue with the guys in my group when I took over was they're lazy and not used to working. I have my new boss's permission to "encourage" them to find other opportunities so I can get replacements.

@TamAngel encourage them out of the company

I was a manager receiving one of those folks. I also have seen people who were promoted that were not capable.
JohnYahYah · 61-69, M
Lol... where did he get the idea that "80%" sounded like a good answer??
TamAngel · F
@JohnYahYah It confirmed what I already suspected. He comes in around 8:30-9:00, takes an hour (or more) lunch, and by 4:30 he's gone.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
I’m willing to work 150%
JohnYahYah · 61-69, M
@Rokasu that isn't physically possible, unless you are putting in 12 hour days
TamAngel · F
@Rokasu I told him the new job will require 120%, 10-12 hour days, he looked like I had kicked him in the you-know-what.
JohnYahYah · 61-69, M
Ask if he only plans to embezzle "a small amount, walking-around money, like everyone does"
TamAngel · F
@JohnYahYah He's not smart enough, and I recently banned him from travel because he was taking trips to one of our other plants that he didn't need to.
JohnYahYah · 61-69, M
OMG I assumed that he was working in a retail store or something. Get rid of him ASAP
