Studying Geography in my spare time.
I am surprised at the correlation between History and Geography. But not famous as correlation between Geography and Science (Chemistry I believe)??
Again, once you start studying the topic is vast. Lands, population, Birds/ animals, Oceans, Countries, regions, locations, weather, Volcanoes, Mountains...
Again, simply by sticking with one or two topics the experience of gaining knowledge would be endless!
For me using "Mnemonic memory" works best in remembering names and dates. But another form of memory may work best for you.
